Photographer’s Note

This is the church Sant'Antonio Abate in the Old Town of Locarno in the Swiss canton Ticino. It is the huge catholic main church of the city and it was built from 1668 to 1674 and altered in the 19th century. An older church on this place has been proven for the 14th century.
At the end of the 17th century the rich corn-dealer guild of Locarno commissioned Guiseppe Antonio Felice Orelli a huge side altar with an also huge painting. You can see it in the workshop. The motto of the whole interior of this church was "No chance to Reformation!"
In 1863 a part of the church collapsed under the weight of too much snow and the choir, the nave and parts of the facade had to be rebuilt.

Sant'Antonio is a very dark church - but the today's possibilities of photography help to show it's most impressive splendour inside. Please see workshop photos.

There's an interesting noteworthiness: The church has a rather holey natural stone facade. It's the only place where a bird from the southern edge of the Mediterranean broods in Central Europe, the Pallid swift (Apus pallidus). You can detect them rushing around the steeple in my photo.
