Shopping Motivator Photo

Photographer’s Note

Let's face it I'm not a shopping fan, I try to buy everything possible on the internet and to minimize the time spent in shops others than photo and computer ones. To add to the unexcitement, all shopping centers in Switzerland look very much alike, there is a choice of Coop or Migros for food, often Denner adds the discount touch, then an electronics shop, be it Fust, Interdiscount or M-Electronics, and it goes the same for other sectors, a very uncompetitve and standardized offer controlled by few big groups.

So it requires a little extra to draw me to the recently reopened shopping center in St Margrethen, a sleepy border town with Austria. And this image shows the incentive, a very good offering in curves and lines which combined with perspective allow for dynamic images, this one is a stitch of 7.

Oh and yes I also spent 5 loooong minutes storming the Migros... ;-)

Bonjour Jean-Yves,
D'ordinaire je ne suis pas très attirée par ce genre de photo mais là je dois reconnaître que c'est magnifique !
Ce mélange de formes, de couleurs, de directions, de lumières est stupéfiant ! La propreté du lieu et la qualité de la photo font aussi leur part.
Tu sais vraiment tout photographier. Bravo.

Effectivement il n'y a peu de dépaysement avec l'enseigne Visilab mais l'architecture est très sympa ainsi que le blanc, bleu, jaunes. Ton pdv permet un grand graphisme avec ces courbes et lignes droites. Ce serait ridicule que je fasses mes courses sur internet avec un Migros et Coop en bas de la maison.

I thought the motivation was to play going up and down on the escalator while the women get on with the serious business in the shops. ;D
Anyway you played very nicely with all the curves, lines and colours to produce an excellent graphic image.

Bonjour, Jean-Yves -

An interesting use of deliberate wide-angle distortion! One thing that attracted me to this scene (if not to the mall itself) is the odd coloring in the escalators. It's clearly in the original (the people are normal colors), but I find it very unusual, and in good contrast to the natural wood of the railing.

It's shopping time !! L'architecture de ce centre me fait penser à celui de "West Side" prés de Berne. Tu as choisi un bon angle de vue pour nous faire profiter de la scène.

I agree with you, Jean Yves, these lines and curves can be definitely the only motivation to visit such places...unfortunately in many shopping centres in Italy you are not allowed to take pics, so I solved all my problems with these places: I just don't go there!

Voilà une manière sympathique de faire ses courses : avec ton Canon. Pour moi la règle est également de les faire le plus rapidement possible.
Les escalators bleus sont magnifiques.

Excellente prise de vue,c'est paramétré au millimètre tant au niveau de la netteté de l'exposition et du cadrage.Bel assemblage de couleurs sous cette lumière artificielle.

Salut JY, unlike you, I need no excuse or motivation to shop. And here, I think I would really enjoy myself! I love the lines and curves here. Great idea not getting everything exactly sqaure-on - it never seems to work where as what you've done here, does. And it shows us more of the design. Ca a l air difficile la vie d accro du shopping en Suisse lol!
Sacré boulot d assemblage ici. J ai bien le rendu final tout en profondeur et en courbe. Je trouve le reglage final de luminosité un peu plat, mais je ne suis pas forcement sur le bon ecran pour juger correctement de cet aspect.

Il n'y a pas que St-Margrethen qui soit tranquille; j'ai rarement vu un centre d'achat aussi vide de monde.

Pourtant, je trouve que l'endroit est plutot accueillant et je partage ton interet pour l'amenagement des lieux, au point d'en faire une photo.

Le puit de lumiere, les courbes qui s'etirent, les neons bleutes des escalateurs contrastant avec la chaleur du bois, un bel ensemble savamment photographie, ou l'exposition est impeccable en depit des ecarts de lumiere.

Bien vu.

WAS, Du bist ein Einkaufsmuffel :))) Es gibt nix Schoeneres als mit sieben Taschen pro Arm in die Garage zu wackeln und zuhause nicht mehr wissen wieso man eigentlich was kaufte. Habe gerade letzthin drei T-Shirts gekauft und eigentlich gefaellt mir keines mehr so richtig ... zum Glueck waren sie von H & M, dann lassen sich solche Fehleinkaeufe verkraften. Toll dieses "runde" Gefuehl, dass Du mit diesem Bild eingefangen hast, spannend die neonfarbigen Rolltreppen.

Was erzaehltst Du denn da von langweiligen Shoppingmeilen ... die Leute reisen extra weltweit an um im Globus die VISA-Karte zu strapazieren oder im Glatt Centrum sich wund zu laufen ... LOL. Das Ladensterben hat schon lange lange begonnen und ist weltweit zu bemerken. Geh mal nach Denver/Co ... das hoechste der Gefuehle an der so genannten Einkaufsmeile sind alle paar Meter ein Starbucks ... wir sind verwohnt ... noch ... Gruss + schoner Abend, Barbara.

Le POV excellement choisit donne une bonne profondeur de champ et allonge comme dans le future la prise de ces corbes et de ces droites.

Five hours shopping? Ralf would have killed me by then for sure. ;)

I know that Migros well (go there with my Mom when she visits). Seems they've done a lot of renovating! Fabulous stitch. I love this shot - very artistic, great graphics, fantastic colors and the people on the escalator add the final touch.

Fantastic wide angle shot, Jean Yves. The curves and contours in this picture coupled with the ridged straight lines at center really enhance the optical effect of depth. I love the contrast of the natural wood against the cold steel look of the escalators. Furthermore, the image presents us with eye-catching vibrance and sharpness. Well done.
