Old Town atmosphere, St Gallen

St. Gallen features one of the most picturesque old towns in Switzerland: many of the houses and buildings being from the 16th and 18th century, sometimes with painted facades, often adorned with wrought-iron signs and carved and painted wooden oriel windows. Walk along the pleasant alleys and browse through the many small and charming shops.
Architecture from different eras characterises St.Gallen’s cityscape. Stroll through the attractive Old Town with its quaint narrow streets and lively squares. Linger at one of the street-side cafés or refresh yourself at one of the typical “first-floor pubs,” which is an Old Town restaurant located on the first floor.

Exactly 111 oriel windows adorn the façades of houses in the pedestrian zone and they bear witness to the successful textile buyers who used to live here. You will find most of the artistically carved oriels in the following streets: Spisergasse, Marktgasse, Kugelgasse and Schmiedgasse.

St. Gallen

St. Gallen’s most famous landmark is its Baroque cathedral with the Abbey Library, which houses some 140,000 documents – in part hand-written and over a thousand years old. The library probably also has Switzerland’s most beautiful Rococo hall. The entire Abbey precinct was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1983.

The name and foundation of the town stem from the Irish missionary monk Gallus who founded a hermitage here around 612. From 747, the then St. Gallen monastery was already following Benedictine Rule, which required the contemplative study of books and accordingly also stipulated the presence of a library. In the Middle Ages, the town developed into an important hub of culture and education in Europe. Later, the St. Gallen embroideries attracted international recognition and brought prosperity to the town.

St. Gallen is a university town with a focus on the economic sciences. The home town of the renowned «Mummenschanz» theatre group offers a varied cultural offering with theatres and museums. In summer, the romantic art-nouveau Dreilinden-Weiher open-air pool with its splendid views over the town attracts visitors to swim. (Source: myswitzerland & wikipedia)

this is a wonderful cadre that comprises a big part of this beautiful, picturesque town in two levels. Despite the different light conditions in the street and up the hill, the picture is very clear and well lit. All the details of the architecture, chromatic hues and even small reflections are clearly visible and the photo gains vividness and a lovely atmosphere. It's a really beautiful place, thank you for presenting it in this way!
