Castle of Glarus Photo

Photographer’s Note

No it really isn't a castle but railway station. But grand stone architecture gives impression of something bigger than a station on a dead end branch line on a town of Glarus with roughly 5000 inhabitants. I think style and size represents local pride on this capital of the canton with the same name.

Kari,
Nice shot of this fine train station. Your composition and POV are fine here. The lighting and colors are good with nice sharpness and DOF. There is some lens distortion with the outer parts of the shot bending inward. This could be corrected with the perspective tool in most PP programs.

Interesting architecture for a station with a mix of styles making it look a bit of a hybrid. I like the mountains towering behind it under the low cloud.

I like the architecture of this train station ... just like a castle. Nice clouds over the rough mountain peak. The inclusion of the lamp post is a good idea for more depth & strong vertical perspective or lines. Can't say if I'm familiar with this canton at all but I'll look it up. TFS. Regards. Latiff.

What I like here Kari, is that greyish sky; also it's an attractive building in color and unusual shape... I believe the WS looks good with the straight lines... Regards, Daniel

Very few places have this view of buildings standing in front of mountains, to give such a majestic feel. You have composed it well to contrast the buildings strongly against the greyish mountains clouded by a stormy sky.

Places of this view can be found in Switzerland, Canadian Rockies, and Colorado.

Hi Kari,
Wonderful contrast between the dark sky and the sunlit building. It does look like a castle, but of course the blue and red SBB/CFF logo immediately tells us that this is a Swiss railway station. The photo is well composed, but I have to admit that I prefer the WS version with the corrected perspective.

Indeed this is a railway station with style, fitting well to the importance of railway in this country, and it seems the weather is always awful in that tiny canton...

Hello Kari,

Back then, by the end of 1800s and beginning of 1900s they put much effort in railway stations and post offices as those were these days representation buildings, like operas are today!
The fine light makes the building stand out well with sharp fine details, a good feeling of depth in the frame...
