Photographer’s Note

Appenzell is one of the most traditional regions in Switzerland. Far away from any beach activities, Landsgemeindeplatz of Appenzell is not a place where one would expect to find a beach volley tournament.

More famous this square is of Landsgemeinde (general assembly) of the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. Eligible citizens of the canton meet last Sunday in April to decide on laws and expenditures by the council. Everyone can debate a question. Voting is accomplished by raising hands. As Appenzell Innerrhoden is the smallest canton of Switzerland by population, this kind of direct democracy is still possible.

Hi Kari,
An unusual view of Appenzell, but I guess that nowadays, beach volley tournaments are organized almost anywhere (we have them in Geneva too). Good POV from above and I like the way you managed to include some of the traditionnal painted houses in the background for contrast.

That one made me laugh, you present a proof that modern civilization can reach even modern Appenzell Innerrhoden, at this pace in a few years they may even have televisions ;-)

Kari, to really appreciate this shot someone needs to have a better understanding of Switzerland and particularly of places like Appenzell. I once saw such event in Basel with a brazilian team playing volleyball and Samba coming out of the boxes at max volume. It was completely weird, but this one here is even more weird. I like to see the pink house in the background that gives the feeling of what this place is really all about. Also interesting to see the small swiss corporate life (Coop) taking its participation on the event. This composition would be even better with some alp mountains in the background ... ;-)

Hello Kari,
I know this place very well because I live a time in Switzerland and visited Appenzell frequently.
Perhaps I drunk too much Appenzeller liquor but I cannot remember having seen a beach there. Even I cannot remember having seen the near river withou blocks of ice flowing.
Surprising scene. I am some disappointed for the attendance. Here in Spain we are more interested in beautiful women. In Appenzell however women were allowed to vote for the first time in 1990
