My Moraine Lake Photo

Photographer’s Note

Here on TE Moraine Lake is a favorite subject, but for us Europeans it is a bit far to go for a smalll shooting session, last time I saw Moraine Lake in summer 1993 I had a bad camera and the weather was miserable, couldn't change the weather but I bought my Olympus IS-1000 few days later in Vancouver...

The good news is also here in Europe we have plenty of beautiful alpine lake, such as here the Seealpsee situated at the foot of the Säntis in the Alpstein mountain range, I tried to get there by the end of march but the way was blocked by an avalanche, now the way is free and already numerous hikers patroll the area, but there are no cows yet, they'll get to the alp in late may.

The day was too windy to get the spectacular reflections that make the Seealpsee so popular but later when hiking in the background of that image I saw a chamois at close distance.

Enjoy this early visit to "my" Moraine lake, only a hour away from the Wasserauen railway station, but please keep your clothes on ;-)

un petit coté Alberta dans ton image !!
une saturation un poil forte sur les bleus, et un rendu trop sombre à gauche pour mon coté taquin du matin, pour le reste que du bon !!
joli marriage que ce Mark II et ce 24-105 !!!

Bonjour Jean-Yves,

J'aime beaucoup cette image que je trouve bien équilibrée : un beau ciel bleu (peut-être un peu trop saturé), une jolie montagne (en particulier cette pointe au centre), un lac bordé de quelques nevés et un premier plan, l'arbre, très bien placé pour contre-balancer la partie gauche plongée dans l'ombre.
Seul petit bémol : l'arbre est légèrement coupé sur sa droite.
En tout cas, c'est beau et ça donne envie d'y aller !

Nice landscape!! Wonderful blue! It will surely have been cold, but in toning it feels a bit cold as well. Could have done with a slight filter overlay to make it feel a bit more sunny in the sun parts. But I like it as well as it is!

Salut JY. It actually looks much more similar to Lake Agnes, but you are right in that Moraine Lake is a TE classic in its own terms. Well composed shot with a good use of the trees as a foreground visual anchor, and opening up the view towards the patches of snow on the rugged rock face in the back. Beautiful scenery indeed.

Hello Jean-Yves,

Un vrai décor de carte postale. La partie droite est peu sombre mais c'était le prix à payer pour obtenir une neige correcte. J'aime beaucoup la montagne qui forme l'arrière plan. Avec sa point et son angle bien prononcé, plus que le lac, elle est la vedette de l'image. Bravo !

Un peu fous ces marcheurs en tenue d'Eve !!

What a stunning scene. Very beautiful and well-composed. I guess that the dark shaded areas would have been difficult to handle for most cameras but EOS 5d mark II it obviously is less problematic. The picture is perfect. A superb job!

Bien vu ton humour, c'est vrai qu'il y a un petit air du lac Moraine...bien que dans les Rocheuses le site est plus grandiose ! De belles teintes lumineuses ... sauf pour la falaise à gauche qui semble un peu sombre ...

Superbe compo, avec cet arbre qui termine la photo à droite. La partie dans l'ombre supporterait effectivement un peu plus de clarté, mais ça ne devait pas être facile avec un contraste pareil.

This is an amazing landscape and it must be great pleasure to walk there. The dark cliffs at left worked perfectly for me for creating splendid tone differences on lake. Well, I must say that your Moraine Lake looks so beautiful as well. How could I have missed this when I was in Switzerland?? I was a little too far from there, but I will keep it in mind if I go to Switzerland in the future.

Anyway, back to this photo. It's an incredible view with beautiful mountain peaks, wonderful blueish waters and snowy peaks. Great POV with great light, beautiful colours and details. I love it! Great work, Jean Yves!

Great shot, nice balance of the tree on the right with the shadows on the left, and the shadows contain enough detail to hold the interest. Great color capture overall. There is some slight wide-angle distortion, but nothing much.

Bonjour, JY. Ça vaut bien le Canada. Il manque peut-être les kayaks colorés, mais pour le reste, la comparaison tient la route. Jolie composition avec l'arbre bien placé sur la droite sur sa petite butte rocheuse qui apporte une bonne source de contraste. Avec l'arête qui descend de la gauche, il met bien en évidence le sommet du Säntis qui se détache bien sur le joli ciel.

What a majestic view you've captured. I don't see any reference to a filter, but a circular polarizer appears to have produced this magnificent contrast. The pristine white and deep cobalt blue both appear with high fidelity and resolution.

Ahh, so you also purchased the 5D Mark II! It produces beautiful colours!
This place really reminds me Moraine Lake that I also know well from TE. But this small lake is unique in its own way. The surrounding mountains are so impressive and the clear blue sky makes good contrast with the white snow. I like the small amount of green and the pine added to the foreground.

you are always the charmeur and funny guy when it comes to present your flawless images. LOL, the swiss version of Moraine Lake. Actually you captured the essence of this most famous canadian lake. Quite impressive. Even the diagonal lines of the mountain are the same that you encounter all over the Candian Rockies.

LOLLL! Voila mon premier sourire de la journée avec ton hyperlien sur le hiking en tenue d'Adam... Ils sont fous ces helvètes!

Mais pas de danger pour que cela t'arrive, tu ne seras jamais tout nu avec ta nouvelle MarkII!

Bon, maintenant, de là à comparer cette butte à nos fières montagnes canadiennes, il y a un pas à ne pas franchir; c'est la seule chose qu'il y a à voir ici, alors laisse-nous notre seul attrait digne de ce nom!

La lumière et les couleurs sont riches à souhait, mais la partie ombragée en mène un peu large; serait-ce ton polarisant qui aurait amplifié la situation?

Faudra que tu reviennes voir nos Rockies, maintenant que t'as le matos à la hauteur et l'habitude d'emporter tes ciels bleus dans tes bagages.

En attendant, le tien est effectivement superbe et semble valoir le détour, même la zone d'ombre est intriguante, je me demande ce qu'uin HDR aurait fait avec cette scène.
