Photographer’s Note
We were walking along the Baltic coast in Oxelosund, in the region of Nyköping, when we saw this edifice. I wondered if it was some kind of cairn, these megalithic mounds. After walking around it, we did find out what it was; but I am suggesting a GUESSING GAME. What is it according to you?
The Swedish members will probably know, so if they could let the others try first; thank you!
Notice the white mark just under the yellow rocks. This is common all along the Baltic sea; it seems it's caused by the saltpetre in the water in this area. At least, we think it's the reason. If anybody could confirm this, I would be grateful.
In WS, I will add a few photos showing these white marks all along the coast.
22-05-08: GAME OVER! Thank you for taking part in this game! It's not as romantic as one would like: it's an army storing place for military equipment, of recent building! We could see it as we walked round to the other side: There were notices, the door was open but obstructed by an army canvas.
All the same, we couldn't but admire the work of art and camouflage. The building blends so well in the scenery, and as many of you agreed , it looks like a megalithic monument.

Bonjour Marie-Louise,
Joli !
Amitiés, Gilles

Hej Marie-Luise,
yea! your quite right, there's also very low water at the moment in the Baltic because there havn't been any strong western storm that have been driven in fresh water from the North Sea.

Bonjour Marie-Louise,

Buen trabajo. Un abrazo, Consuelo

Hi MarieLouise,
Very nice colors in the picture, though I would prefer a bit less sky on top. I like the contrasting colors and textures of the rocks - in the foreground, the middle and the mound, even the white marks. And also the trees with leaves against the bare trees. No clue what that structure might be; it looks man-made, perhaps a giant sculpture or a house.
Best regards,
Lamberto

Hi Marie-Louise,
Great colors and contrasts between the ski and the rocks. No idea what this is but just to guess maybe a place to bury their dead. It must have taken some effort to have the stones so even so I think it was very important. Thanks again for the history lesson.
Sincerely
Mary

Bonsoir Marie-Louise,
Jean-Charles

Salut MarieLouise,
good clear capture of fine colours. I do not have another idea of being a tomb. I like the good textures and soft diagonal lines.

I am guessing this is a burial mound of sorts; however, I have never seen one so close to water and the ones I have seen in Sweden (near Upsala) were covered under grass.
The image is quite nice with the fine branches in the trees, blue sky, well toned rock in the foreground. Perhaps the trees are a bit too dark and contrasty, but if they weren't, the rocks would not look so nice and they are the more important focus of the image.

Hola MarieLouise,
Josep

hi Marie-Luise,
a good view of this ancient edifice. Beautiful colors and sharpness.
In Italy, in Sardegna Island, there are some edifices of this kind, called "Nuraghes".
Ciao

Salut Marie Louise,
An intriguing place indeed, no matter it is natural or man made. It reminds me much a megalithic mound, but my knowledge on Geology and History is quite limited to risk any guess. The green and shapes of the trees make a nice complement to all those rocks. It's a very nice photo.
I like much the WS#1 also.

Hi MarieLouise, the monument between the trees is very good to see on a very nice region-place.
What about another perspective?
Have a nice Sunday.

Marie-Louise bonjour.

Hi Marie Louise,
My guess is it is some kind of burial grounds. Anyway it is seen in excellent sharp details and brilliant clear colors. The evergreens make a lovely contast with the pale blue sky.

Hi Marie-Louise,
I followed your guessing game for quite a while and I did not knew for sure what it was either, but my guess was that it had a military purpose. The picture as such is also very attractive. I like the blue-greyish tone of it. It is also very well-composed. TFS!
Cheers,
Ulf

Bonjour Marie Louise
Amicalement.

Bonjour Marie Louise,
I can't understand how I missed this photo taken in Sweden! :) This view is so typical of Scandinavia! Trees on rocks, rocks and trees... mainly pine-trees.. but all together they create a very beautiful view!
Of course (as you stated in your Note) it may be not so romantic, but Natura always adds some element of romanticism. I have seen such a beautiful, romantic places (ex-military territory where you can see traces of military presence like old canons and military crosses) in the Stockholm Archipelago: it's Fjäderholmarna.
All in all, I like this photo very much: I like its natural colours and, of course, the composition!
Thanks for the WS photos, too :)
Kind regards,
Elena
