It was Motala river which gave Norrköping life and power. Waterpower got the many mills which were built here since the middle ages working. Within Norrköping the river has a free fall of 18m from which a lot of power was available. Not only that, in the river Salmon and other fish could be found.
Along the banks of Motala River a number of woollen spinning mills and cotton factories were established. By the middle of the 19th century, Norrköping was the second largest industrial city in Sweden. 70% of Swedens textiles were woven here.
Magnificent factory buildings are proof of the cities industrial wealth. Today, none of these buildings are used in the way they were intended. The sound of the last spinning mill was heard in the middle of the 1970’s. The city has decided to preserve this area by putting much money and time into it.
From 1750 the Holmen Tower is the entrance to the old Holmen area. Holmens Bruk was working in this area from the early 1600’s and only ended the production of paper in 1986 when a newer factory outside Norrköping took over.
The area which had been a dense industrial area before nowadays is used for offices, a concerthall, a conference centre and other activities. In the area around Holmentornet you can find offices of some large companies, a restaurant and a dancingstudio.
On this photo you see the Holmen Tower from the inner yard. This photo is the first of a series of five about the preserved Norrköping industrial landscape. All photo’s in this series were taken in July 1997 and are scanned from positive slides.

Hi Harko. A neat smooth shot with judicious proportion of light and shade. Patch of cloud popping over the clock tower with the backdrop of a blue sky is a good perspective. The note was useful too. Thanks for sharing. Regards.

Good shot, Harko !
Beautiful building, vivid colors and a marvelous blue sky. The cloud gave a good contrast with the dome.

I like your composition for this shot placing the clock tower off center and showing the side building. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail.

This tower is a beautiful architecture, the framing is good and I like much the cloud at the top of the batiment. Good colors, lighting and contrast too, a good work.

a light a little too hard but a composition very well managed. the little cumulus give strongness at your composition. well framed !

A well composed image, a classical approach!
Lovely colours and shartp fine details, I like a lot the placement of the fluffy white cloud...
Good point of view, right in front of the tower!

Hello Harko. A superbly taken picture, with lovely lighting and shadows, and very nice colour tones. The shot is so very sharp and superbly presented. That red car adds a splash of colour too. An excellent architecture shot, first class.
PS I went to Linkoping once, I think it's not far from Norrkoping.

It's a beautiful building and photo, with a gorgeous luminosity, colours and sharpness and very neat compo. It is hard to believe that it is a scan, as it doesn't show any noticeable loss of saturation. That contrast of "gold/yellow" over blue is great that red car actually gives another touch of colour that looks nice. It is strange how it is so deserted.
