As my three latest uploaded photos were taken in spring, autumn, and summer, respectively, I thought it was time for a winter picture. I have chosen this one because it is not one of standard winter views of mountains and/or forest covered with fresh snow, still I like this picture very much. Here we are in the very center of Stockholm, capital of Sweden, and see the island of Riddarholmen ("knights island") from the Stadshuset quay across the strech of water called Riddarfjarden. The picture was taken on a cold, dark, and short day of the end of December. I have converted it into B&W and increased contrast to give it the cold feel appropriate for that day. The colour version is in the WS.

Riddarholmen, the island of the knights and nobles, is a remarkable oasis of peace. A Franciscan monastery was established on the island in the 1270s and dissolved in 1527, after Reformation came to Sweden. The tower we see here belongs to Riddarholmskyrkan, Stockholm's only survivng medieval monastic church, left from that monastery. After the great fire in 1835, the church acquired ithis unusual lattice-work spire which makes it one of Stockholm's most recogniseable landmarks. During Sweden's golden age in the 17C, noblemen were granted plots on the island, where they built stately mansions and palaces. Today just a few privileged people live on the island and those palaces are now government offices.

privjet aljek,
i did not feel comfortable with your latest posts but this one speaks to me, and it speaks loudly - i love this diagonal, the way you used the barrier to divide this cityscape into two parts, plus the b/w is excellent here;
very nice work,
best wishes, j.

good composition in B&W.
exellent contraste.
aldo.

Yes, this is very good. Take a close look at the above critiques and you'll find out what direction to follow ;) This is the perfect example how your pictures will never find the point of no return. Love the b&w, the huge diagonal across the frame and the cityscape on the back. This pure white on the left triangle is very good and so is that stroke of shadow in the water's surface. Very beautiful view.

Hi Alexander,
Very well composed with this diagonal, great depth for your view. Interesting choice for B&W, well done.

A beautifully taken winter scene Alexander, and I like how the line of the barrier cuts diagonally through the frame.
It would have been good to break up the triangle of snowy empty space in the left corner with a passer-by or a few pigeons or something, but I don't think it matters too much.
Excellent work.
Ben

Hi Alexander,
Maybe you placing different all the four days, one of autumn, winter, spring and summer!!!
You use excellent the handrail as perspective line, also as very well depth, a snow view in summer give absolutely are charms, certainly a view on Stockholm.
Greetings,
John

A great shot Alexander, with a great composition and a fine example of the perfect use of a guiding line starting from the lower right corner of the picture. Althougn I like the use of b&w, I would also like to see a colour version. Excellent note, too!
Congratulations!
Hercules

Fantastic POV and elegant use of perspective.. excellent work Alexander, really fine.. BRAVO!!

ciao,
Fabio.

A nice add to your four-seasons miniseries, Alexander. I think the major asset in your composition is the way in which you used the zig-zagging handrail to establish a strong diagonal perspective. Nice crisp view towards the old-town buildings, and b&w almost always looks pleasant on a winter scene.

Hi Alexander,
wonderful composition and wonderful B/W treatment here. I like the inclusion of the diagonal sidewald and a fence covered with the snow as the whole old town... Wonderful!
Have a nice day,
Tomi

I agree with jerzy about this shot being stronger than a few of your past shots. A lovely diagonal photo and a beautiful view on this city. I am a "human" photo freak, as you may know, and so Im sort of looking for a human presence here. I think that would be the cherry on the ice cream if you filled the foreground with a passerby or a romantic couple.

Great architecture shot.Superb Compo and sharp.
Well done.
Regards.

Privet Alexander,
I like here the PoV to build this composition strong in lines, the BW is not bad but I won't surprise you much if I tell you I prefer the color version, I like the warm touch the skyline stones add to the winter landscape. So now 400D is announced, let's wait for some tests, new captor, anti dust and bigger LCD, but still no spot light measurement, let's wait for the tests !
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

I think you did well to convert this to black and white as the original is quite washed out. I like the strong composition through use of the rail. Well done.
Mark

beautiful view and panorama, also I like the use of the diagonal line, good idea and result too, compliments.
The color version is also good.
Ciao
Vinicio

The composition and perpective are excellent here, with an very nice diagonale of the bridge, very carefully buit. I am not really keen on B & W, but it works well for this winter ladscape of snow covered buildings.

All the best,

Emmanuel

A few people have already mentioned the appropriate placement of the diagonal: what I like about it, is the way you have used it, not as a lead-in line as usual, but as a frame for the rest of the view. I do not often go for B&W, but here it is appropriate.

Hi Alexander!
In October 2005 we visited Stockholm and we fell in love with that city. When we were there everything was sparkling with gold-brown autumn tones. Your photo is quite different though, because it shows us the cold face of Stockholm. This is a very good winterly panorama shot. The mood is a bit depressing, but I like it a lot. I guess, that it was not easy to take such a picture in December, since the days must be extremely short then.
Regards
Andreas
