Evening by the lake
or: Painting with the camera
After dinner at the Swedish Manor where I stayed for some days in July, I went down to the lake to have some shots in the fine summer evening.
What is real? What is a dream? The work behind this photo
Well, not much to do about the nature – I think it has more than enough being itself. But I have found that assisting a little is not that bad.
As for the pre process work: Like throwing a little stone in the water to have some movement in the very silent water surface. I mean waiting for a fish to jump is more for the anglers than for an impatient photographer. Pls. forgive me for this if you think it is ‘interfering’. Forgetting to remove the polarize filter was not intended, but having it on made for a little underexposure that I find not so bad for this photo.
Then the post process: Slightly cropped. In PS Elements with lassotools and levels, a small addition of light to the tree, the foreground and the fine stone/island in the middle of the composition. Then to bring out the mood as I remembered it (some times the camera is ‘lying’ making an original with far too much blue - in this case). Added some warm light by use of some more red and reducing blue in levels. The final touch by using the frame to close in the compo. First a 3 px black line and then the outer frame app. 100 px white.

Hi Jack, excellent mood renedered in the picture, so fascinating silent without any ripple, except of course fo the stone.
I have a friend who calls this: 'horny water', and I really understand what he menas, I always want to swim in water likes this, immediately disturbing it with that, but it feels so great.
Very nice one, Jack, very good PP work as well.

Well this is a beautiful reality that is beautiful enough to be a dream. There is nor critique just praise for the beauty you present ( I am going to sleep soon maybe I will dream of this). there's a favorite song of mine by the Grateful Dead it could have been written for your photo
"If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come thru the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?
It’s a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps they’re better left unsung.
I don’t know, don’t really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.
Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.
Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men....

A very special mood in this evening picture. So calm and peasible, and this movement you added is fitting perfectly, especially next to the big stone ! I'm not really sure about the underexposure, but I really like this quiet place and the evening light. Great compo with the cloud balancing everything with bright white.
A great painting Jack, congrats and thanks !
Youssef - coming back...

Douceur de vivre ! Lieu magique où tout semble serein, tranquille, isolé, en un mot : paisible !
La beauté est faite de choses simples, qu'il faut savoir regarder et attendre le moment favorable.
Très belle réussite Jack.

Congratulations on simple yet extremely effective idea - throwing the stone in the water. Why didn't I ever think of this? Why didn't anybody else think of this? Half of the sunsets shown here on TE (including my own) would be so much more interesting.
Anyways, great idea.... great picture.

Hi Jack, An almost perfect mirror broken by the stone. I like the timing of you taking this picture. The ripple did not impact to the main reflection scene yet, which it shows the dynamics of the environment. A well designed picture. Well done.
Fixfocus (9385) 2005-07-12 13:10

Hi Jack. Wonderful and lovely mood conveyed by this photo painting of yours. Skillful framing using the natural elements and showing a very nice reflection on the lake. Throwing the stone was a good idea here as the concentric ripples do add a fine textural foreground detail. Very good this one, easy to see why it goes into your personal favorites theme.

Hello Jack. This photo is superb. I like very much the composition with the waves in the bank, and the reflections on water. The color is very special, and the mood is interesting with this old appearance. Very good job.
