Stockholm is burning Photo

Photographer’s Note

Today there were many places in Stockholm with similar fires. And all over Sweden as well. Today was Valborg, the welcoming of the spring. As other swedish tradition, it has both religious and pagaian origins.

The fire goes toguether with a choir singing traditional songs. And everybody is happy :o).

This fire, on Gamla Stan, started at 8.30. Then I had to wait a bit for it to be good-looking. It's a pity because 15 minutes befaure that picture, the sky was so great !

On the right, it is Stadshuset, the City Hall.

I had to underexpose it a bit to get a proper result.

Wonderful night shot with stunning colors of the fire and of the sky. I like the way that everyone gets away frm the heat. very good shot, Youssef.

Je ne connaissais absolement pas cette tradition suédoise qu'est Valborg. C'est très bien de nous la présenter et de plus du as parfaitement composé la photo. Par ailleurs, le feu est très bien exposée et on devine la foule qui fait la fête derrière... Cela me fait penser au carnaval de chez moi...

Hi Youssef, what an impressive fire, and light, very difficult to achieve, as the fire is to bright, but we can see very well the silhouette of the city and also the beautiful evening sky.
You did a very good composition, having the fire on the left side. Very good work Youssef.
It is very curious, you do fires to welcome the spring, and here in Catalunya, we do fires to welcome the summer, in the night of 24 of June, in the day of Sant Joan, with the shortest night of the year.

If you did a photo 15 minutes early, why don't you put it here as a WS to give more information of this one. Sometimes I do that, for example in my last post, in the door Bab Boujeloud of Morocco.

c'est une très belle photo, je pense que le ciel chargé n'enleve rien à l'esthetique de l'image, de plus les couleurs du coucher de soleil sont encore visibles.la sous expo est une boone idéé car elle fait ressortir le feu qui est superbe, les couleurs très marquées et le contraste entre les flames et le bois rendent l'image très puissante.
La note apporte toutes les infos nécessaire. Beau travail.

Thank you for sharing the nice picture, and the information also. You did a very nice job capturing the mood of the scene, I think probably more important than the sky! I wish I could have been there in person!

La manière dont les flammes ont été capturée est tip-top.
J'aime bien le cadrage avec dans le fond cette "église" et cette foule derrière le feu.

Jag hann före,
fast din bild var definitivt finare!
Bålet är lite mer välordnat - ni köper väl veden på Preem i Sthlm LOL!
Du har ett bättre avstånd till elden och har fått med folk bättre, även om man ser mer aktivitet i Karlskronabilden.
Underbar skyline, men jag håller inte med dig om färgerna - dom är minst lika bra här.

Bon je vais pas être original, le gros point fort de cette photo c'est sa composition bien sentie et travaillée. Le second c'est la maîtrise de l'expo avec des blancs pas cramés (et sur du feu c'est plutôt pas mal :-), et le troisième, c'est le ciel sous-exposé qui mets bien en valeur ce feu lumineux.

Peut-être que pour rajouter à la chaleur de la scène, j'aurais cadré un peu plus de spectateur et plus près, mais évidemment c'est plus facile à dire qu'à faire...
Très bonne photo en tout les cas ;-)

A well chosen time to catch this Valborg bonfire, Youssef. The flames are really dramatic, but you're still able to see the logs. The crowd being a bit dark is compensated by the Town Hall tower as a silhouette towards the faint light of the early Spring sky - especially the red lining. The composition works well and the sharpness is excellent. Very well done!

Expecting a lot of bonfires on TE, I went for 1st of May instead... ;o)

une belle image de feu, dire que l'on fete l'été comme cela ... alors qu'il fait bon ! on devrait faire comme les suedois.
Une bon cadrage, un beau foyer, une belle lumiere. dommage que le publis sur la droite soit un peu dans la penenombre. l'arriere plan est joli et situe la photo.

Hej Youssef, very nice night shot, well composed, the fire is so beautiful. I like the silhouette of the Stadshuset and how it stands against the dark but still blue sky. The colours are very nice. Bra gjort!

it's very interesting, everything is so sharp.DOF is excellent .I think we have the same tradition in turkey and it is called as HIDRELLEZ; welcoming of spring and fires like that, the same.

Hi Youssef. This is a moody and atmospheric capture of the Valborg fire, with a great exposure treatment to render the yellow and orange flames in the foreground, and to subtly indicate the spellbound crowd watching the proceedings. Also a good composition to have the silhouette of the City Hall Tower in the back. Great shot.

Bonjour,
Jolie photo! Le fait que la scène soit en Suède donne une ambiance viking que j'apprécie. Le feu n'est - en plus - pas facile à capturer. Bien vu.
