This picture was taken yesterday outside the Swedish Radio building (which was once the Hasselblad Building). The night had been cold, but I took this photo, it was already 4 degrees above zero. This was probably the last chance to catch some perch or whitefish.
The view is straight east (see the map view) and this is the Lundby Harbour.
On the southern side of the Gota River you can see the Skanska Building, which is 83 metres tall and was finished in 1989. The architect was Ralph Erskine.
You can also see the four masts of the barque (Barken) Viking, built in 1906. She participated in several of the Great Grain Races from Victoria, Australia to Falmouth, Cornwall. Barken Viking won the Grain Race of 1948.
I have added a complementary picture, as a WS. I had moved about 20 metres north and took that picture in a southeast direction. Across the river you can see the two churches inside the moat. To the left is Chistinae Church (the German Church) and to right is Gustavii Church (the Cathedral).
Between them is the tower at Liseberg (the amusement park). You can also see the top of Ferris wheel there.
Update March 3rd
I have added two more WS pictures, that I took today! The first one at exactly the same place as in the main upload. The second was taken at the moat, in central Gothenburg!
Winter is apparently not yet over, there are still people trying to catch a fish through the ice.

Such dark ice looks pretty scary for going fishing. I like the way how colour of ice and sky matches.
That red and white painting fits well to that big building.
End of winter? Still one month or so to be expected here in Tampere.

Hello Gunnar - The clean light has given this shot a crispness and contrast which I find very appealing. The reds and whites are wonderful against the blue-greys of sky and frozen water. I love the FG detail with the two ice fishermen, a sight quite alien to me and for that all the more fascinating. Strange too, as I associate fishing with a more rural pursuit and here we have the city in the BG. A fine shot. Warm regards Rosemnary

Beautiful vibrant colors with perfectly juxtaposed subjects in the frame. The mood is so well depicted in the frame.
Thanks and kind regards,

A superb warm vs cold colour contrast between the red highrise in the bg at left, the tilted red pole at right and the blue hues of the ice sky and frozen water. Good sharpness and the ice fishermen add a nice focal point. Tfs!
eldancer1 (36343) 2013-03-01 9:21
Brrrr! This look so cold! But I've seen fishermen brave the weather just to go fishing, I guess some people are just diehard about their hobby. Good pov and dof with sharp details. Wonderful colors. Well done, tfs.
Energysavingelk (2001) 2013-03-01 9:23
a good matching of the colours of ice and sky. The most important message is that the sun does still exist. In Germany we had a winter with smallest amount of sunshine since the beginning of extensive weather recordings in 1951, only 96 hours of sunshine during 3 months on the average, and in some places even less!
Hope to see the sun tomorrow...

Ciao e buon fine settimana

Hello Gunnar ,
A pitty that the man on the right desn't wear a red jacket ! :) This is an excellent composition , with two strong elements (the red and white building , and the two fishermen) in a good diagonal . A beautiful light , too , combinated with greu tonalities of the sky and the ice .
Well done .

macjake (68476) 2013-03-01 13:02
really cool photo and scene.
lots of color variations and points of interest.
the pops of red and green work well, and having the men up front gives an effective fg/bg separation, I really enjoy this one

Too cold for me but I like the picture very much, with sharp details as the pieces of ice floating.
You are very brave taking pictures out in the below zero cole temperatures! I have to hand it to you my friend!!!
all the best, have a great month,

abmdsudi (54565) 2013-03-02 7:18
A beautiful shot nicely detailed in great light, textures and colors tones. The dark grey sky, patches of snow flakes and strong compo easily lures the eye in while specks of vivid colors add as effective anchor with lovely touch of people interaction. The contrast strengthens the shot, Nicely done, Congrats.

this new POV on this already well known place works excellently and is giving us another great impression of your home town. The management of the bright light is excellent. I am crossing my fingers for an early start of spring! Thanks for sharing!

Hello dear Gunnar,
I hope and wish that the winter is "up up and away" now ! But who knows ?
This capture from Gothenburg is just amazing. The fishers in the foreground adds life to the scenery.
Good TE entry with many interesting and usefull notes.
TFS and have a nice weekend

Two photos in one: beautiful view of the city and nice scene with ice fishermen, excellent clarity and sharpness

Ice seems very thin.i 'like the perspective and framing that lets us see the urban environment that surrounds them. The light is beautiful in this gray sky in the background.
Have a lovely Sunday.

nice scenery. Amazing fishermen on the ice. It's a bit dangerous. Interesting place in Gothenburg. Also good WS. Superb quality of photos.
Have a nice Sunday.

Kamilutka (8107) 2013-03-03 8:03
the scenery might be wintery but one can feel a little bit spring in the air, don't you agree? I think this is because of the light which is slightly warmer or maybe brighter colors which you nicely included in the composition. Very nice sharpness too.
Lets wait for the springtime :-)
Have a nice evening
ACL1978 (7511) 2013-03-03 9:29
Maybe the end of calendrical winter, but evidently no one told the weather - cold as always here, and it looks like there as well! Nice look at this fishing practice, and odd to see it in what looks like a somewhat industrial area here.
larsy (28) 2013-03-04 0:07
Våren känns redan i luften.

Here in Belgium we are almost of the winter redeemed, temperature are almost 14° Celsius.
This is always splendid for see how these men fishing through the small opening
Sharpness and clarity is very nice.
Excellent composition, also a very nice subject.
Pleasant for look at. TFS.
Have a nice Thuesday,
wolf38 (31296) 2013-03-05 7:17
Hi Gunnar. Title, photo and text complement each other perfectly. At the moment, the anglers have their winter fun, but soon it's all over. The cool winter colors and the bright red of the building fit together well.
siolaw (38292) 2013-03-05 23:42
4° is not very hot (very cold for me!) but sure the ice would melt and that type of fishing probably becomes impossible!
You found super light there and the scene is interesting as it shows a typical local activity.
batalay (38933) 2013-03-06 5:48
This morning in Washington, DC we are blanketed by 15 cm (6 inches) of snow already, with another 15 cm expected. That is usually enough to paralyze traffic in this area, although in Boston, they can cope with it better. But the idea of venturing onto ice to fish is scary, and in the United States left to descendants of the Vikings living in Minnesota. Your note is highly informative and engaging, especially since it was the site of Hasselblad.
Warm regards (pun intended),
clic (17129) 2013-03-06 16:05
There's more than Canon G10 advanced technology to give off such perfect depiction of grey tones that convey, as a result, allover pleasing densities and natural colors!!
There's lot of "know how" with the mouse too!
And I noticed you straightened the verticals in town (to please me!), as painters do for a plausible architectural look.
Modernity juxtaposed to historical masts takes "all the spotlight" across the Gota River enliven of the two fishermen who create a nice diagonal visual balance to the red building.
macondo (19564) 2013-03-06 23:19
A marvellous shot, full of interest and artfully taken, with a great note. I like the good balance of this shot, which makes great use of the red and white building and contrasting masts as a focal point from which the gaze moves to the fishermen on the ice. Great capture of the Winter light, and some interesting alternative views in the WS.
jemaflor (98029) 2013-03-07 4:26
Well composed with colourful building and fishing men on the other corner, Good light and cold impression with the ice, pleasant to see.
s_lush (16134) 2013-03-09 22:47
Thanks for such a comprehensive and very well-illustrated story about this part of Gothenburg. Your visual and textual information will be in use in our bus-tour over Scandinavia, which is planned by my wife and me to be realized in July. There are highly interesting architecture, nice natural features, vivid colors and very high quality in your pictures. Great job!
sevy (58) 2013-03-12 1:49
Nice shot in a reporter spirit.
We have those 2 strange people sitting on the ice for fishing and then we know where they are with the background sharing the environment very close to the town.
As bonus, a nice lightning putting in evidence the buildings against a blue-grey sky.
claudeD (39247) 2013-03-13 7:58
very fine picture from Denmark with a good composition, fine colors and good framing. I hope that you are right. Here in Luxembourg winter restarted yesterday ... TFS.

On a "warm" sunny day of these hopeful fishermen and the dramtic sky line.
Hansaphotos (8135) 2013-03-17 7:24
What a great winter scene you have captured here. A superb composition where you have placed the two main elements perfectly towards two diagonal corners in the frame. The Skanska building really stands out here and provides a good colour contrast to all the blue. Excellent work, and a great note to accompany. Thanks.
Enjoy your Sunday.
Best regards, Erling
ourania (46288) 2013-04-23 11:40
you have included four wonderful descriptive photos in this presentation, all of them with superb depth and fascinating tonalities and contrasts. The details have been rendered in an excellent way inviting us to study the sceneries and learn a lot about them. The passion of the fishermen is incredible! I like very much the soft but warm light and the way it exalts the vivid colours. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great evening,
kato (11630) 2013-04-27 18:48
You're capturing well this place by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive to see the spectacle in which anglers make a hole in ice and take fishes, and the many buildings of backdrop. I feel that ice will melt away soon as you note. The whole is harmonized beautifully by a good arrangement and nice color combination. And, the tall building with red/white draws out a remarkable impact in this image. This town is visible to the place in which it is quiet and easy to live, include WS.
