Stockholm Strömkajen‎, a photo from Uppland, Svealand

Photographer's Note

Over four winter season, starting September 2009, Ports of Stockholm renovates the Strömkajen quay.
The primary reason we are renovating the quay is that isostatic uplift has resulted in the wooden pilings used in the construction of the quay now being exposed at low tide. This has resulted in the quay's wooden foundations and supporting pilings beginning to rot and has led to subsidence of regions of the quayside.

The new quayside edge will also be significantly lower. The isostatic uplift has caused the land to rise around a half metre in total and this has made embarking and disembarking difficult as the difference in heights between the boats and the existing quayside is now too great. The new quayside edge will return the quay to its original height and make it easier for everyone to use the boats. (The land in Stockholm rises at a rate of around 4 mm annually).

The cool blue tones bring a distinctive wintry feel to this unusual composition. The ship's funnel is nicely juxtapositioned against the dome of the background building.

Hello Daniel,
This is a rather original picture from my city, actually not far from where I live. It is cropped in your special way that cuts out a narrow segment of the view. The focus has been moved away from the boats towards the distant Skeppsholmskyrkan and most of hall the clouds.

The winter's athmopsher in the North of Europa well collected with this shot: fog and snow. The boat well located give an excellent FG.

january in Swden must have been real cold. Interesting crop, i like this view, colors and frame very good.
