Photographer's Note

This is a third photo of roe deers taken in the area along Fyris River south of Uppsala. This one is taken in mid-June. At this time of the year they have plenty of food and are usually in good shape. This is not always the case in winter when some of them could look pretty skinny.
Roe deers can graze more than 100 species per year. Despite this they are very selective. Roe deers are trying to find the best food with high nutritional content and high digestibility, i.e. food without too high fiber content. In winter they mainly eat small shrubs and heather. But if it is a lot of snow roe deers eat wigs of both coniferous and deciduous trees. Roe deer are no pronounced grass-eaters and herbs such as fireweed cow-wheat and wood anemone are among their favorites Sometimes they also visit gardens and all of a sudden all the beautiful tulips or other garden plants are gone.
