Photographer’s Note

This is lake Mangen in the middle of the so called Finnish Forest in western Värmland, near the border to Norway.

There were a lot of Finns moving from Savolax to the vast forests in Värmland and Dalarna in the beginning of the 17th century. Present day Finland was then a part of Sweden. These Finns were experts in burn-beating, i.e. they burned the forest to cultivate rye in the ashes.

Later on these habits were prohibited when the mining companies needed the wood.

Around this lake is an abundance of Finnish names on the map, all with a 'Swedishified' spelling, like Hongaharju (the hill in the background), Kylla, Mustakangas, Rammasenmagg, Edlaho, Kurra and so on.
