Photographer's Note

This is a Common Pochard (Aythya ferina) which is a diving duck. As usual the photo is taken in the area along the Fyris River south of Uppsala. This is not the river itself but a small lake/pond. The grey relections on the water are bare trees.
This is a male. Males have rost coloured heads and necks and in spring bright red eyes.Females are brown. It is a medium-sized duck of length of 42-49 cm. Despite its name is not very Common in Sweden. About 1000 breading pair in Sweden. The Common Pochard feed mainly by diving. They eat aquatic plants, molluscs, insects and small fish.
