Photographer’s Note

The Uppsala University Botanical Garden, what is today called the the Linneus Garden is the oldest botanical garden in Sweden. However, there a two botanical gardens in Uppsala. In this picture the newer of the two is seen. In the 18th century the Linneus Garden needed more space and therefore,Peter Thunberg, successor of Carl Linneus, persuaded King Gustaf III to donate the Uppsala castle garden to be used as a new botanical garden. The king donated money to an orangery building, the Linneanum. It was inaugurated in 1807, in memory of the brith of Linneus. The organery is still used for its original purpose.
