Photographer’s Note

There are two Botanical Gardens in Uppsala the Linneanum or the Linnaeus’ Garden and the Botanical Garden. The Linneanum seen in this picture is the oldest of the two. This garden was founded in 1655 by Olof Rudbeck, professor of medicine at the University of Uppsala. The garden the was destroyed by a huge fire in Uppsala in 1702.

In 1741, Carl Linnaeus professor of medicine took over the garden. He inceased the garden and a new and larger orangery was built. The architect was Carl Hårlemann.

The garden was very important for Linnaeus as scientist and teacher. Here he made many of his scientific observations. His ideas are reflected in each part of the garden and plants have been carefully chosen for educational purposes.
