Photographer’s Note

St Eriks Graend (Saint Erik’s Alley) is one of the few medieval streets left in Uppsala. The buildings on the right hand side have medieval origin and were part of a defense wall in medieval times. Uppsala’s oldest building Domtrapphuset is situated at the other end of the alley. It houses a restaurant called Domtrappkaellaren. However, most of the buildings here partly destroyed by a fire that destroyed most of Uppsala in 1702 and then restored in the 18th century. The restoration was led by Baron Carl Haarleman (1700–1753). A well-known Swedish architect. Today, there is a number of small shops and businesses including a moving and porter service company and a jewellry store in St Eriks Graend. The alley has got it name from Erik the Holy or Saint Erik who was a Swedish king in the 12th century. He was murdered in Uppsala and a relic casket of Erik is kept in the Cathedral of Uppsala. It contains bones with an injury to the neck. Erik is also the patron saint of Stockholm.
