Photographer’s Note

Stockholm is often described as a "beauty on water". For sure with all those islands and water, it's really a great city !! In the wintertime, water turns to ice and snow, of course, and gives us pretty nice sceneries !!

I'm missing the winter, the ice and the cold, somehow... The swedish people are all waiting for summer and sun, and they find very strange (and almost stupid), that I'm missing the winter !

This is a view on Riddarholmen, in Gamla Stan. The church you see is Riddarholmskykra, the Church of Riddarholm, as easy as that :o) I forgot the name of that boat, but it never moves from there. It's a restaurant and a hotel. Just behind the boat was the place when we had the Valborg Fire.

This picture was taken a few minutes before this one, at the end of february. One week later, everything was completely frozen there, and you could cross walking. Many inhabitants are going iceskating there every year !

Bonjour Youssef,
Très jolie photo de Stockholm. Le site est bien connu mais ce début de banquise lui donne un aspect différent. J'aime bien la projection de l'ombre au premier plan, qui laisse imaginer un autre quartier, une autre ville… Le petit décalage qu'il produit évite l'impression de "jolie carte postale" qu'on pourrait trouver dans cette photo. Peut-on chercher à y deviner la silhouette du photographe ?

A great compo,Youssef!
Very well composed with excellent use of the space,colors and contrasts are great.I like the graphic effect frome the frozen and snow covered harbour.The shadowline frome the trees and houses in the forground is a fine detail.

Magnifique ! La ville semble se détacher encore plus, entre ces deux couches de tons bleus. J'aime beaucoup les dessins formés aléatoirement par la glace, en revanche je ne sais pas s'il fallait laisser les ombres à l'avant-plan.

Beauty on water... nothing coul be more appropriate. Stockholm is really a marvelous city.
Great shot showing the red buildings in a very good bright light. I would have been tempted to remove the shadows in the foreground but the pix is marvelous anyway.

beautiful city shot. I really like the shapes in the ice and the shadow that is on the ground, it gives us an idea of where you are looking from. the colors are clarity are also wonderful.

je ne connais pas du tout ce coin de la planete pourtant pas tres loin de la France...je le decouvre grace a cette tres belle image. J'aime bcp le contraste chaud froid des couleurs, entre le blanc de la neige et ces jolies facades.
Le cadrage est excellent

tres impressionnante cette photo, je ne sais pas comment j'ai pu la manquer. la glace met bien en valeur la ville et ses couleurs chaudes. les bateaux sont coincés dans la glace ?
belle netteté et beaux effets entre la glace transparente et opaque.

J'aime bien que tu aies laissé les ombres de l'avant-plan, ce sont presque deux photos l'une dans l'autre, et cela apporte un intérêt supplémentaire à une vue qui n'en avait pas besoin car la luminosité est parfaite, le point de vue aussi.
C'est très bien fait, Youssef, bravo!

Ce mélange d'architectures n'est pas choquant; je préfère voir ceci que les horribles HLM de la région Parisienne.
La luminosité est douce et l'avant-plan donne une bonne profondeur à l'image.

Hi Youssef. Well, this one is genuinely impressive all over - the view of the city with the icy patches in the foreground, and the grand light, already merits to be commended by itself. But to have the house and tree silhouettes on the ice in the foreground really adds an extra quality that I don't think I saw before in a photo. Excellent shot.

Hi Youssef, yesterday I saw this photo of Stockholm, and it liked a lot to me. I think sometimes there are some photos that have something special, them are really very well taken and capture your attention, this is one of them! Really very well done, everything, the composition, including the shadows over the ice, the textures of the iced sea, the snow, the red/brown houses, the light, 1/3 for the sky... the white boat (of course), as you can see, it seems everything has decided to be in a perfect order, and you captured it.
The image has is very clear and with a very good light and contrasts. Good POV. Best regards! and have a nice weekend!

Le contraste entre les couleurs chaudes de la ville et les couleurs froides du premier plan de glace, le cadrage très juste font une très belle photo. L'avant plan détourne un peu l'attention et ferait une photo à lui tout seul.

Le site est magnifique et cette ville qui émerge au milieu des glaces semble presque un payasage de dessin animé tant elle paraît irréelle et magiquement belle. Les couleurs sont franches et la composition ménageant un long avant-plan de glace, est très réussie.

Je découvre tout juste tes photos et celle-ci est particulièrement réussi et originale !
J'adore les ombres des arbres au premier plan et surtout sans voir les vrais arbres.
La glace ajoute une belle nuance dans cette composition très réussie.

Hi Youssef,
Again a very interesting picture. It's summer in Holland now (25*), but when I see this scenery I long for the winter again. As for your compo and the shadows, I think when it was possible to leave out the upper left part (nothing to see there actually) and focus more to the right, the top of the Riddarsholmskykra would have been more to the right (outcentered), the right part is architectical more in harmony with the rest of the scene. As for the shadow, you don't need it to lead your view to the object. The icy part is interesting as it is. Enough analysing. I'd love to visit Sweden in winter.

Magnificent cityscape. The contrast of the warm colors of the city buildings against the cold white and blue creates a great contrast. Also like the placement of the city in the top third opening space for us to admire the nice ice formation.

A very clear and sharp shot of this beautiful city. The partially frozen river frames the buildings well. Unusually the shadows in the foreground actually enhance this image rather than detract from it.

Quand j'ai vu dans votre présentation l'image relative à Stockholm, j'ai cliqué immédiatement sur la vignette ! Superbe photographie à tous les niveaux.
Cadrage parfait. La seule chose qui pourrait éventuellement nuire à l'image c'est la présence en partie basse et à gauche du mât (un petit coup de tampon, et l'affaire est dans le sac).
A voir le nombre de visiteurs (602), les membres ne se sont pas trompés quant à la qualité et l'intérêt de l'image.

This is a magnificant composition in many ways, Youssef - the capture of the setting sun on the buldings creates some very rich colours which provide a great contrast to the dark sky, and then on top of that you have the added interest of the swirling shapes in the ice in the foreground, and if that wasn't enough, you have topped it off with the inclusion of the shadows of the buldings and the trees at the bottom of the frame. It is a long time since I have seen a photograph with so much of interest to study in it. Well done. You should be justly proud of this one. Cheers . . David

Oh, I missed this one! I have the same one from last march, at that time, it was still very icy and cold, but there was no snow and shadows on the ice, and is what makes this photo so very strong.
I think it took it from exactly the same pov, it was a small path, wasn't it? Right behind you were some houses... I also walked there, but if you continu to walk there (which is on your left hand if you have this view in front), the path becomes very very steep. And it was very icy and slippery, so I almost felt. I had to crawl to get on the non-slippery street again. It was a bit scary. Don't know if you know that path, but it was very close from where you must have been.

Anyway, thanks for sharing this beautiful winter wonderland photo!

Stockholm is a very good city for take nice pictures, maybe due the special light due its position on the globe, but not always is easy to capture well so interesting light and you have done it perfect and with affix of ice who make still more difficult to expose good. Perfect job.
