Photographer’s Note

The stern of my kayak steering down Bysjö kanal (Village lake canal) in Borlänge. This canal is just about as long as what you can see in the picture. It connects the river Dalälven with the little lake Bysjön (Village lake).

The purpose of the canal has to do with forestry. Until about 1970 the timber was tranported floating on the rivers and along the rivers therre where papermills and sawmills. At Bysjön there was a sawmill and the lake was modified to a sorting plant for timber. Still the lake is full of concrete blocks standing in a pattern that divids the lake into squares. The canal was used to get the timber from the river to the lake.

There is also a very dark side of this canal. Just over ten years ago a man was found floating in it. He had evidently not drowned and the story that was revealed was very tragic. The old man had refused to give his younger relatives money and the daughter and son in law had kept him tied in a cellar and tortured him physically for a long period before finally killing him. I just wanted to show you that rural Sweden is not just beatiful scenery and idyllic little villages.
