Coming out on clear ice to enjoy the open spaces is one of the kicks in this picture. In the winter is very important for me to find the little light there is, this picture is taken at 2 pm and the sun is already low. This was our last coffebreak before heading home.
The other kick is the vehicles, they are in swedish called "spark" which means "kick" because that is how you drive them. You stand on one of the runners, hold on to the handle and kick with the free leg. On flat ice and with spikes on the shoe you can easily reach the same speed as a bicycle on a flat road.
We used to skate on the lakes for a few years, that is a big winter sport here, but we are poor skaters. The risk of getting hurt is quite big on skates and the demands on the ice surface limits the number of possibilities, therefore we bought "sparks".
The "spark" is a traditional vehicle, it has been used for a few hundred years at least, and its main use is transportation of small goods and children in winter time, but it is a fine toy too. It is common in Norway, Sweden and Finland but I don´t know about the rest of the world. And it is still manufactured in at least two places.
The pole laying on the ice is a special tool to check if the ice is thick enough. If both steps in the stepped end goes through the ice when you hit the ice with it you should have turned long ago and are about to get very wet ;o)

Interesting composition complimented by an interesting scenery and story. I like how the sunlight walks through the sky and the snow. The reflection is also very well-seen.

Very nice capture, Ebbe. The thumbnail made me think it's a nice beach with to chairs. This snow bikes are very interesting.
You captured a nice sunset at noon. I like it.

Beautiful, well balanced composition, Ebbe. With all that lines, almost all of them showing in the direction of the sun.
And the good note learned me again something, thanks.

Bravo!

Great elements, good photograph, brilliant note, inspiring thoughts.
(B&W, a few points of contrast, and a minor sharpen might increase the impact a little more? See WS.)

Beautiful picture and I like the "spark" too. Never seen one in Quebec. I'd love to try.

La bonne vue après les personnes nous donne l'impression d'aller dan leurs directions.
Le cliché a une belle profondeur avec les siéges au premier plan.
La clarté est belle et les détails sont bons
Bonne prise Ebbe

I grew up in alaska. While we didn't have steps, I have fond memories of sitting out on the ice enjoying the meager sun, or the spectacular northern lights.
I've always loved these sorts of pictures, where the colors of the days are muted down to yellows, browns and greys. Very nice.
Great note. Great picture. Thanks so much for sharing!

Thank you Ebbe, today I travelled to Sweden and discovered the "kicks" !
We often share views of our countries through landscapes and portraits, but it is a very good idea to share as well habits or leasures. All the more when it is showed in such a beautiful pic.
Very informative comment, good work Ebbe.

Nice image and notes - I’m not sure of the spelling but isn’t it called a "sprakstöting". The composition and time well chosen - good work Ebbe.

A great Nordic setting in this pic Ebbe. I guess the person also does the ice fishing (?)
The light the long time sitting still, yes a very fine composition.

A minimalist dream. Fascinating, and powerful. Congratulations.

Very beautiful composition and interesting note. The light here is excellent and all this area of ice is magnificent. Good shot!
Très belle composition et intéressante note. La lumière ici est excellente et toute cette étendue de glace est magnifique. Bien vu.

Very esthetic composition and interesting notes to show this original scandinavian mean of transport. The cold light is beautiul and conveys a feeling of isolation on this lake. Nice you show the left spark with the person from 3/4 behind and the the empty one right from behind. It gives a very pleasing balance to the image.

Oh, Ebbe! Thank you for posting this picture - it is not only beautiful, but also stirrs up my childhood memories from the Old Country (I was born in Leningrad) - I mean the "Finnish" sledges, and the ice, and the low sun over the forest!
rodalvas (641) 2004-01-11 19:12
A very informative and interesting description, paired to a very nice picture! The perspective is very inviting and the lone human figure gives off a sense of space which is very evocative.

I love the composition here, the figure seated on the chair is isolated in a winter scene. Colors are good, details are sharp. Altogether a well done image.

Found your "spark"-photo and like it a lot. Reading the comments I understand that a kick is something unusual. I lived one year in Jokkmokk and used my kick during six months all the time. This photo makes me remember that period.
I think you have succeded very good in transfering the feeling to us viewers.

I like the diagonals in the composition. The light is beautiful and the story interesting and informative, thank you.

Well, I've lived my entire life in Canada and I've never heard of these vehicles, but my husband has. Also never seen them. We love to do 'ice walking' in winter, but I use spikes, or cleated snowshoes. My husband rides on ice like this with cleated tires on his mountain bike! I am not that brave! You must be just a bit further south than where I live right now - Dec 28, sunset is at 1:20 pm! Plus, we have no trees!
