Catching Crabs Photo

Photographer’s Note

Some youngsters are catching crabs from a jetty at Näset in southwestern Gothenburg.

They tie a mussel (on the halfshell) to a long string and dip it into the water. When a crab comes, trying to eat the mussel, they just haul it up.

"Näset" is the definite form for "Näs". According to the dictionary, this can be translated to "isthmus, neck of land, foreland, spit".

According to GoogleMap, this jetty was not in place when their picture was taken. But it was there yesterday! You can see it here

And, did they get any? I like to see the children wearing life jackets. Would not think they are necessary in such shallow and calm water. It is a nice shot with a great diagonal. Well done.

the Sweedish coast fascinates me. I like this composition where the pontoon creates a diagonal which gives a fair sense of depth, the transparency of the water, the sight of the cliff in the bg and of course the children who add a touch of colour. Well done,

Hello Gunnar,
A good way to pass the time and keep out of mischief. Well presented composition with good colours and sharpness. The diagonal placing of the wooden jetty creates a sense of dynamism whilst the orange life jackets make for some nice splashes of colour. Have a good day!

There is some quiet action going on in this picture. We can't se much but easily imagine the kids' excitement. Some splashes of colour brighten the picture where the blue and grey tones otherwise dominate. A nicely composed picture with good sharpness and exposure.

the perspective view looks grand and great, especially when low "Scandinavian" clouds come into view :)
these kids dressed in bright life jackets, trying to catch crabs, surely enliven this bluish-grey landscape!
I wonder if this is due to lens distortion or.. is the line of the island (in the distance) really such - a little curved?

You did 3 in 1 here: it's a fine view of the bay, with great light, sharpness and sky, it is very effective graphically, for the placement of the jetty on the diagonal, and it is a nice children portrait that appeals to everyone's memory of the joy that children can find in every trivial activity. The life jackets are pretty photogenic, for the colour punch they bring.

Good diagonal composition, showing a very summery scene!
The red lifesavers stand out well, contrasting all the blue...
But I wonder what will become of today's kids, seems they are not allowed to take part in normal play without a number of safety precautions, poor them!
