Photographer’s Note

This is one of the buildings at the Museum of Local History and Folklore (”Hembygdsmuseum”) at Styrsö in the southern archipelago of Gothenburg.

While Googling for more information on Styrsö, I found this on the English Wikipedia: ”The main communication vehicle on the island is a three-wheeled moped, called a ”flakmoped” in Swedish.”

That was about everything on Styrsö.

But from some Swedish sites, I found that the name of this island was, in the 13th century, written as ”Styrisö” where ”ö” of course is Swedish for ”island” and ”styris” comes from the word ”styrir” or "styra", with the meaning of ”steer”. It is believed that the highest peak on this island was a good landmark to steer the boats to.

I also found another interesting reference to the verb ”styra” on Wikipedia:

The word starboard comes from Old English steorbord, literally meaning the side on which the ship is steered, descendant from the Old Norse words stýri meaning “rudder” (from the verb stýra, literally “being at the helm”, “having a hand in”) and borð meaning etymologically “board”, then the “side of a ship”.
