Øresundsbron [the Øresund Bridge] connecting not only Sweden and Denmark, the provinces of Scania and Zealand, but also the cities of Malmö (3rd largest in Sweden) and Copenhagen (largest in Denmark). Cities separated by a "moat" since the beginning of time.

But since the inauguration on July 1st, 2000, this link - of which the bridge is a part - has experienced an unexpected increase in traffic. On a daily basis 15.800 vehicles crossed in 2006 and also 21.300 train passengers did the same.

Today some 14.000 of the region’s inhabitants are able to commute to work between the two sides of Øresund. This will rise to 40.000 in 2020 and 80 – 90% of these commuters will live in the Malmö area and work in Copenhagen.

One of the reasons is the Danish labour market with its shortage of labourers, combined with higher unemployment in the Malmö area. And around half the commuters are Danes who have chosen to move to Southern Sweden with its lower housing costs and car prices.

Suddenly all the reasons for this link were there!

The ferry about to pass below the high bridge belongs to Nordö Link, sailing between Malmö and Lübeck/Travemünde in Germany four times a day.
