Photographer’s Note

The Turning Torso is a unique tower built near the coast of Malmö, Sweden, just across the Öresund strait from Copenhagen, Denmark. The building consists of five pentagonal sections, which gently bend until the walls are 90 degrees from those at the bottom floor. The tower was built in 2002 after a characteristic crane was demolished nearby, leaving Malmö without any landmarks to distinguish its skyline. The design is based on a white marble sculpture; when searching for a unique concept for the Malmö skyline, the chief of the local coorperative housing association saw the sculpture and tasked his architect with transferring the concept to a residential tower. The building is currently the tallest in Sweden and also in all of Scandanavia.

We took a day trip across the Öresund during our short trip to Copenhagen and visited the tower. Unfortunately, most of it is closed to the public, as it's a private apartment building, but there are some shops on the ground floor. The beauty of the tower, however, is definitely on the outside!
