Photographer’s Note

The sea outside the town of Varberg situated some 70 km south of Gothenburg. I took this picture from the massive fortress of Varberg originally built on a cliff very close to the seashore. The view from the fortress overlooking the sea is stunning and being there one can understand the strategic importance of the structure controling the sea traffic. The Varberg fortess is a monument built during the Danish sovereignty, but became swedish property since the Danish occupiers left in 1647. The oldest sections of Varberg"s Fortress date from the 13th Century, while the fortress walls were built in the 17th Century. In the 19th Century a large part of the fortress was used as a prison and today it houses a museum.
