Photographer’s Note

Hi. Today 20/6 -08 is the Swedish national holiday midsommar (midsummer) taking place. For you guys who don’t know what that is, probably most of you.
I will give a brief description. It’s a pre Christian event, celebrating the Summer Solstice. But when the Christians came along they adopted the day to be St. John's Feast Day in many countries. Midsummer is celebrated in many parts of the world but often with different names or traditions. In Sweden it’s a important holiday to spend time with your family and friends, eating and drinking. In this picture a group of people in the Swedish national costume are raising the midsummer pole. It’s clothed in green leaves and often are flowers woven into the leaves. When the pole stands upright, you dance around the pole in circles singing traditional songs.

I hope you enjoyed my shot and learning more about Swedish midsummer. If you celebrate midsummer differently in your country feel free to post a comment.
