Photographer’s Note

The Bohus fortification was buildt in 1308 by the Norwegian king Haakon V Magnusson to defend the southernmost border. The fortress was long consider one of Norway´s largest and strongest forts, wich has proven correct-through 14 sieges Bohus has never been captured.

During the Nordic Seven Years´ War 1563-1570, the Swedes besieged Bohus fortress, without capturing it. It was through the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658 that the province of Bohuslän – and Bohus fortress- became Swedish.

In 1786, the military garrison left the fortress and three years later It was decided that the fortress would be torn down and the residents of Kungälv were allowed to take stone from the fortress for their homes and gardens.
