This 16th century castle is located in a small coastal village called Sta. Cruz, in the Council of Oleiros (County of Corunha), and is a fortress restored and rebuilt over the centuries. It is located on a small island and is artificially connected to the mainland (see WS).

At the end of the Middle Age, a chapel devoted to Saint Anton was built on a small islet in the bay of Corunha as a place to shelter the sick navigators of the gangrenous evil "Fire of San Anton". This islet was later used as a lazaretto, a place to confine travellers suspicious of suffering leprosy.

The present castle dates back to 1587. During the English assault by Francis Drake, in 1589, the castle -that was still under construction- effectively defended the walls of the city with its artillery.

After the attack of 1639, in which the French squadron besieged the city, the bay of Corunha remained protected by the cross fire between the castles of Saint Anton and Saint Diego (no longer in existence).

In the 1960s, the Ministry of Defence relinquished it to the city, after a long time of it being a military prison.

Since 1964, the Archaeological Museum is housed here.

In the spring and summer time this is one of the crowded beaches, next to the city of Corunha, where to spend a very nice day. Fantastic sand, shallow waters, good restaurants, cafeterias, pubs, etc….

Hola JR,

It's a lovely scene from Corunha. You made good use of the sand as the foreground element for the invitation. I like to see the city on the horizon line. Nice natural colors and clarity. Well done!
Saludos,
Carlos

Hi JR,

it is most lovely shot with excellent placement of the motive and most harmonious colours to emphasize the beauty of captured place. The partition of the shot is great, I prefer your decision to invite us to the beach and castle through most vivid sand and give us a sense of castle overlooking the bay on the other side of the sea.

Kind regards,
Jeri

Hello JR,
A pleasant composition, where the huge sandy beach leads nicely up to the seaside castle!
Good feeling of depth with the view to the city in the background, attractive colour palette with the wonderful blue sky as topping!
Greetings,

Hi JR,

nice image, I like the large portion dedicated to the beach. It seems there's a little lack of sharpness.

Hi JR,

The beach and the sea are leading our eyes toward the Saint-Anton castle. The light brings out the beauty of the colors. The curve of the beach is a good addition to the composition. Have a nice day.

Hello JR,
thanks for the response to my bicycle post. Really appreciate it.
This shot of yours is very attractive in the sense that the colours are bright, fun and pure. The orange sand eith stones look very catchy and the opposite of it the deep blue sky. The town break the frame into one third, thus making the whole shot simple but attractive.

Foozi
