| Italianate frescoes painted on the façade of Palacio de Abrantes in Madrid. Housing l'Istituto Italiano di Cultura (Italian Culture Institute) since 1939, this beautiful palace overlooking calle Mayor had been the Embassy of Italy between 1888 and 1939. The palace was originally built in 1653 for Don Juan de Valencia el Infante, but changed hands until it was finally acquired by Italy. The palace owes its name to the duque de Abrantes who bought it in 1842. During the palace's history, it was remodelled several times, most recently after its acquisition by Italy when the Italianate frescoes were painted on the façade. |
