[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Vizcaya Bridge in Portugalete was included not a year ago (July 13th, 2006) in the World Heritage List by Unesco.
It is known in Spanish as "Puente Colgante" (Suspension Bridge) but this is an error because actually it is a transporter bridge. A hanging gondola with place for six cars and dozens of passengers crosses from one to the other side of the Nervion river in about 90 seconds.
The bridge is 164 meters long and about 50 meters high. It was designed by Alberto Palacio, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel and built in 1893. It is still in service. Only during the Spanish Civil War the service was interrupted.
The picture shows the inside of one pillar. From the left-down corner to the center it shows part of the upper platform.
