I shot this picture during an amateur performance of indian music in a small bar in the heart of the Raval.
I recognize the quality is poor (no flash, no tripod, a small digital camera and very low light) but it is a very uncommon image in Barcelona, worth sharing.
The main instrument is a sitar, probably the most traditional indian instrument, with 13 sympathetic and 4 playing strings made popular by the famous Ravi Shankar. The other is a tambura, a very old instrument with 4 strings, only used for drone accompaniment.
Not long ago, El Raval was the neighbourhood with the worst reputation in Barcelona. Located near to the port, at the right hand side of the popular Ramblas, was considered as the center of the prostitution and drug traffic of the town. Although being quite in the center of Barcelona, its narrow streets were avoided by most of the people here.
In the recent years, the Council of the Town has made a big and succesful effort to improve the area, now much cleaner and safe. At the same time the relatively moderate prices of the flats and locals there have attracted many foreigners (from Europe, India, Pakistan, Latin America and north-african countries), than come to live in Barcelona, and there has been an "explosion" of small bars with live-music every day, restaurants, and interesting shops, making the Raval probably the best bohemian atmosphere in Barcelona. |
