I was rather saddened when I saw this young blind girl standing near the cathedral in Ciutadella, Menorca last May. Standing there, handing out leaflets and attempting to sell (I think) theatre tickets to passers-by, she appeared ignored by the hordes of local people and tourists who bustled by, too busy going about their business, shopping or talking to each other to notice her.
The UN theme for International Women’s Day 2012 is "Empower Women – End Hunger and Poverty". This girl might not be poverty stricken nor hungry but I was still moved by her misfortune.
P.S. I have just received a very kind critique on this picture from a new TE member, Janet Greco (Squeakycarrot), who actually, would you believe, knows of this girl! She informs us:
"This is a typical summer scene here on the island, and nicely caught. The young girl is selling lottery tickets, and at any day of the year you can find either blind or not-fully sighted people selling these tickets all around Ciutadella. The reason they are selling these lottery tickets is that one of the national Spanish lotteries is run by ONCE, the national charity for the blind."
Wonderful! And I look forward to seeing some of Janet's pictures of Menorca too.

Hello John! It is a kind of labor and the sale on the street is a good idea to give your day a message that I think are the memories that impose!

very interesting composition..very eye-catching in contrast to the crowd surrounding this young woman…your picture has a strange feeling between sadness and repulsion against the great ignorance of humanity…very nice idea especially on this day..well done..

Hello John - Today I have seen images of women on TE that have really touched me. Here I live in comfort and ease. So many don't. Thank you for posting this shot it has reminded me to be more aware of those around me. An uncomfortable image. Well done Warm regards Rosemary

apart from the unfortunate condition of the girl, the scene is characterized by a wonderful light and beautiful colors, perfectly executed the shot and a due post ... unfortunately my has been banned ... for the title (Woman Is The Nigger On the World) a song by John Lennon, although mine was a tribute to women...
have a good day...

Fantastic post John, for Women's day, looks a busy, yet sad scene, as you say, of this lone lady trying to communicate with someone to sell tickets. Pin-sharp, spot on with the colours, splendid Pov, Great one, Cheers Iain.

With your note this photo, so full of light in the first sight, suddenly becomes sad. The girl looks helpless among all other tourists. besides this feeling, beautiful photo, with wonderful Mediterranean colours and atmosphere. fantastic light.
Warm regards Malgo

What an interesting mish mash of women you have here, from all walks of life and with differing fortunes in life. The depiction of the beautiful young blind lady is particularly poignant. She is without nthe gift of sight yet is standing outside of a beautiful cathedral whose majesty she can never see, selling tickets to a play she will mnever be able to witness herself. Your photo is very moving and thought-provoking. As someone who loves travelling and viewing nature, the gift of sight is a true blessing and makes me appreciate it even more in the face of such a photo.

I only realised that it was International Women's Day when I used Google! How rubbish am I!!
I do like how you have drawn attention to the plight of less fortunate people. It is humbling! There is so much activity going on around the young lady and not one person appears even aware of her.
It is well composed with the focal lady strongly positioned in the frame. The light is obviously very strong but you have coped well.
Have a lovely w/e,

This is indeed a picture with a very good content and a message. There are so many persons here but this blind girl seems to domoinate the picture completely, all other persons are easily ignored. An interesting response from Squeakycarrot!
