Tunnels at La Mola, Menorca, a photo from Menorca, Balearics

Photographer's Note

Taken at the Fortress of Isabel II, La Mola, Mahon (Mao) Harbour, Menorca.

This is part of a series of tunnels which interconnect parts of this huge fortification which was built to protect Mahon harbour, one of the deepest natural harbours in the Mediterranean and one which has, over the years, been extremely important to its occupiers who, over the centuries, have included, at various times, the British, Spanish and French.

You can read more about this fortress here. The Google map, to which I have added a link, is not very good in this particular part of Menorca.

Taken using natural light with a tripod and an 8 sec exposure in RAW and converted and edited in PSE9.

This is another picture which was taken during our wonderful photographic holiday in Menorca with Philip Dunn.

i think it is very interesting to explore old tunnels and fortresses like this, you never knows what is coming up in the next tunnel..
Excellent exposure, both crisp and and handling of the light. I also like the composition, a ghost would be perfect here:) Tfs !

Phillip certainly knew where to take you to help you with your new found skills.
Another very impressive display of camera control; no dark shadows, no burnt out high-lights, in an image that could have resulted in either, or even both !

Hello John,

this one is simply fantastic, great play of light and shadows managed in flawless way - all textures are visible in difficult light situation.
The composition and depth both perfect, repetition of patterns is a bonus to the shot.

Hello John,
A perfectly exposed shot with a great perspective down this tunnel. I like the repeating motifs of the window openings and the attractive warm tones. The image has very good sharpness.

PS I think the red chimney was a later addition to this château; there are indeed other similar ones out of shot. No doubt the owner of the château was Lord of the Manor and could do pretty much what he wanted with his property. Unlikely to happen these days.

it is really a superb composition. Love how you managed the light and shadows. Perfect exposer with nice DOF. For the first time I look at your gallery and found it outstanding. Here in this shot the colour tone is nice also. I can only compare it with Aadil's (whom I respect a lot for his light control ability, feel sorry for his inactivities now a days) work published in TE. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.

I bet you were a happy wee camper when this came up on the viewfinder. What a corker. The play of light and shadow, along with the perspective and depth of field is simply stunning. Getting the right angle on these exquisite buildings is the key - not always easy - but successfully mastered here. congratulations, this is lovely.
