PAMPANEIRA
Casa Número Nueve
The region of mountain villages known as Las Alpujarras clings to the southern flanks of the Sierra Nevada, cloven by deep, sheltered valleys and gorges which run down towards the Mediterranean. The Alpujarra, as it is popularly known, in the singular, is famous throughout Spain because of its unique mini-ecology. Its terraced farmlands are constantly watered by the melting snow from above, constituting a high-altitude oasis of greenery which stands in dramatic contrast to the arid foothills below. This is ideal hiking terrain for adventurous travellers, provided you take along a tent and well-padded sleeping bags - the average altitude is 4,000 feet above sea level.
The cultural interest of the region lies in its fifty-odd villages, which were the last stronghold of the Spanish Muslims, or Moors. Soon after the Castillians took Granada in 1492, all the city´s Moors were forced to convert to Christianity. Those who refused took to the hills, settling in this remote, inaccessible area. Constant pressure from the Christians led to a bloody uprising, the Morisco Rebellion of 1568, which was ruthlessly crushed out, with the public execution of the leader, Ben Humeya, in the main square of Granada. Soon followed a royal decree expelling from the Kingdom of Granada all people of Arab descent, since the "new Christians", as the converts were called, were all suspected of being ¨crypto-Muslims¨ in secret...
The villages of the Alpujarra were resettled with some 12,000 Christian families brought by King Philip II from Galicia and Asturias in north-western Spain. However, these unique hamlets have retained their traditional Berber architecture - terraced clusters of grey-white box-shaped houses with flat clay roofs - which is still common in the Rif and Atlas mountains of Morocco.
Perhaps the most picturesque villages are the famous trio which cling, one close above the other, to the slopes of the Poqueira Valley, where red peppers and tomatoes are still set out to dry on the flat clay roofs, among the tall round chimney pots. The highest one – Capileira, Bubión in the middle and Pampaneira at the bottom, that bustles with crafts shops and restaurants. Also, Pampaneira, has an excellent information centre run by a guiding cooperative called Nevadensis where one can get information and equipment for walking and activities (ask for Elma Thompson's detailed walking leaflets!).

Very nice stonework, which is well focused and clear. I love the deep blue of the sky contrasted with the stone colour of the walls. This house looks like it is carved into the moutain side and looks very solid. Nice composition and interesting subject. Also interesting notes. Well done

Good composition. The photograph is sharp. I like the contrast with the light and the shadow, the curves, the color of the stone, everything!

The texture of the painted stone wall is great. The angle is great and the eye is faced with a choice on which path to take. The tree balances the photo well and the clouds in the sky compliment the white of the walls. The softness of the clouds also contrast well with roughness of the stone walls and path.

I like this composition Robert. The curves made by stones and the leafs of the tree are right open to let a portion of sky appear at the top. Very well seen.
In addition the light is absolutely wonderful !
Great shot.

I understand Spanish...such an interesting title. The number 9 is eechoed by the tree formation and the roof's edges going down to the pathway. Great shot.

Good notes!
I like the POV and the sky, colours are crisp and sharp - the plastic bag on the chimney is a bit of modern day life that we could have done without :)

An exquisite framing you made in this one, Robert, very good how you included the curves of the stone roof and the cobblestone path in opposing sides and corners of the frame. You also handled the light well again in this one, and the strong contrast looks really good on it, too. Nothing to complain here, really good work and also a fine job on the notes.

Very nice photo Robert! I like how the light brings out the nice texture of the wall. The contrast between the colour of the house and the blue sky is very nice. Well done!

Not much I can add to the comments already made, but I will echo a few. Great crispness overall - the polarizer really increases the intensity of the sky. Excellent informative note.
One of the shots that makes you wish you were there.

Robert, just like the others I also enjoy the image. The subject is fantastic and well presented, I absolutely love how the cloud is alligned with the roof (good planing on your part!)The frame is also fantastic, left is framed by the shadow, right by the tree, putting the empasiz on the main subject, the image flows all the way from the roof to the door. Great colour of the sky.
What I think works against you here is the harsh light conditions, you did well given the circumstances and kept everything perfectly exposed, but it lacks shadows, debth and textures which can only be achieved with better lighting conditions, also had you been able to include some local person or even farm animals it would put the image over the top.
Great job.

Striking sky and composition! I like the point of view here, so low to the ground and looking up.
