Photographer’s Note
Saying that only Allah may create life, representation of man or animals or other lifelike objects is forbidden by the Koran. This prohibition has forced artists in Muslim societies to use their ingenuity and turn to calligraphy, abstraction and complex mathematical patterns to create designs and decorations. With every inch of space filled with Arabic script and intricate carvings the Alhambra pleasure palace in the Andalusian city of Granada is one of the finest examples of this tradition.
