El Puente de Vizcaya.

Diseñado por Alberto Palacio, uno de los discípulos de Gustave Eiffel, es el puente transportador más viejo del mundo y fue construido en 1893. Era la solución dada por el ingeniero al problema de conectar las dos ciudades sin la interrupción del tráfico marítimo del puerto de Bilbao y sin tener que construir una estructura masiva con las rampas largas. El servicio fue interrumpido solamente cuatro años durante la guerra civil española. De su casa en Portugalete, Alberto Palacio podría ver cómo su trabajo principal fue destruido parcialmente momentos antes de su propia muerte.

El 13 de Julio de 2006 fue declarado sitio de la herencia del mundo por la UNESCO.

The Vizcaya Bridge.

It is the world's oldest transporter bridge and was built in 1893, designed by Alberto Palacio, one of Gustave Eiffel's disciples. It was the solution given by the engineer to the problem of connecting the two towns without disrupting the maritime traffic of the Port of Bilbao and without having to build a massive structure with long ramps. The service was only interrupted four years during the Spanish Civil War, when the upper section was dynamited. From his house in Portugalete, Alberto Palacio could see how his master work was partially destroyed just before his own death.

On July 13th of 2006 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
