Sud Express – Rite of Passage

Well dear friends, I am bootstrapping my TE presence after the holidays on one of these moments that TE seizes to be only a virtual community: sipping a “caipirinha”-cocktail, brought to Rotterdam through the remarkable Brazilian-Dutch logistical cooperation of Isabel and Rinie . Isabel bought the main ingredient (a full litre of delightful cachaça or "pinga") and Rinie flew it over the ocean back to Holland along with the recipe. Muito obrigado chicas, you both are lovely!

Displayed here is the corridor of the sleeping car of the Sud Express a few minutes before its depart from Irun for Lisboa. The Thalys had brought us from Rotterdam to Paris. The TGV-Atlantique from there to Irun.
The corridor is laying there as a metaphor for the things to come. Beckoning us to get further engaged in the rite of passage that is travel.

In a WS I added a shot of the interior of the compartment.

Pls check the travelogue for some more background information and the evolving travel story.

PCS tech: corrected for perspective distortion, very slightly cropped; contrast, curves & saturation adjusted; altered the exposure of assorted elements; USM-ed; added a frame and saved for the web.

Hahaha, thanks for the note, Bert, and it was my pleasure! Although I have not recovered yet of smuggling all that delicious liquor, my back still hurts, and a caipirinha would do me well. ;-)
Lovely capture of this beautiful train, and I immediately feel the urge of going away by train again, it is SOOO much nicer that travelling by plane. Nice dark colours, and it seems like a beautiful old train, a grand old lady so to speak.
Tfs, enjoy your day, Rinie

I'm ready for a train trip! This is fine Bert, very inviting. How we Americans envy you Europeans who take time out in the summer for serious holidays. This may sound like a political statement, but I really do believe you have a much healthier attitude toward work and play than do Americans. With the shoulder to the wheel and the nose to the grindstone its amazing we get any work done... ;-)

Well done here and lovely note. I envy all of you the chance to tipple together. Fine color and sharp details in such a confined space. You handle the geometry well. Great job!

Welcome back Bert. Wow, they still have elegant looking sleepers in Spain, very nice, and I nice reminder of my best recent train journeys, also by sleeper, what a great way to travel, looking foreward to the rest of the trip.

Hoi Bert,

John.

i really dunno the effect of your picture (and of your story) upon the others but upon me it´s amazing, Bert!
every pixel awakens my curiosity and i feel an extraordinary anxiety (very positive, as if i were a kid foing into my first journey) for the trip that is about to begin.
besides, i ask myself 'what is going on behind those doors?' (something i do not do in real life, for i am not a detective) but I am not in real life now, so let me indulge myself your dreamy trip.
there is urge and mistery in your so well rendered composition.
who could know the ways of the brain and imagination? ;))
tfs

Goedeavond Bert,

Prettige Avond,

Hi Bert, nice to see you back. A good perspective composition and a well-balanced exposure for this interior of the train that looks actually very inviting; the tones of brown color captured in your photo are beautiful. Thanks for adding the WS that adds to the great idea that your posting gives about what it is like to travel on this train.

Hi Bert,
Welkom terug op TE! Goeie vakantie gehad?
Leuk idee om een foto van het interieur van de trein hier te laten zien. Mooi perspectief in dit smalle gangpad en prettige kleuren ook!
Groetjes,
Lars

Maybe I've seen too many movies but there is a certain feeling of suspence in here, behind which door is the murder going to be committed? will the bad guys come rushing in from the end of the corridor? (music)
I think the flash is a too hard, otherwise an interesting photo.

Good one, Bert, looks like some very nice woodwork in this sleeper car. I agree that the flash is a bit harsh, but I do like the deep cherry wood color you brought out.
Matt

Hi Bert, nice one, I like this corrridor, it has an Agatha Christie´s touch, like waiting for the killer to come... Take care

Well, great to have you back Bert! I hope it was an enjoyable time away. And I believe you said you had some writing to do so hopefully you got that accomplished.

This is an interesting first shot to show us. I like it as that. It really gives a feel of going on vacation. We're off on a trip traveling day and night. And here we are wandering the narrow passage along the berths at night. I can hear the sound of the train and the back and forth wobble as we go through this passage. It brings back the feel of the wobble very vividly for me. I went to the state of Washington twice by train, a 50 hour trip, and the wobble stayed with me for a few days afterward.

Mooi strak geframed deze smalle gang tussen de compartimenten met uitzonderlijk goede kleuren, goed informatief overzicht met je WS, blijkbaar gingen de mensen op de loop voor je camera ...:)) ?
