Photographer’s Note
The Holy and Illustrious Catedral-Magistral de los Santos Justo y Pastor is located in Alcala de Henares, in Madrid (Spain). Data from 1514 and presents a sharp Elizabethan Gothic style.
It is, along with the church of San Pedro de Louvain in Belgium, the only temple in the world who holds the title of Church canon, which meant that all his canons were to be doctors of theology.
The history of the temple dates back to Roman Hispania, the so-called Great Persecution of Christians during the reign of Diocletian (284-305). In this context, there is the martyrdom of Saints Justo and Pastor, who, with seven and nine years old, are executed in 304 Complutum outside for his opposition to reject Christianity. In the place where they were executed, and already accepted Christianity in the empire, stands a chapel to house his remains at 414. During the Visigothic period became a cathedral, and their bishops are in the various councils of Toledo from the sixth century. In 1053 Alcalá (or rather the castle of Alcalá la Vieja) was conquered by Ferdinand I of Castile. The following year the Muslims reconquered and destroyed the cathedral in retaliation, forcing the Mozarabic to move to Guadalajara and being sent the remains to the present province of Huesca, until in 1118 he recaptured the city and the temple is rebuilt in 1122. However, Archbishop Raymond of Toledo Sauvetat gets through his friendship with Pope Urban II was restored to the diocese of Alcalá, and in 1129 obtained the donation of Alcalá and lands to the archbishop of Toledo part of Alfonso VII .
Archbishop Carrillo (1446-1482) rebuilt the church and raised to the level of collegiate church. At the time of Cardinal Cisneros (1495-1517) was the elevation to the rank of master plans and the present building, built between 1497 and 1514 in a Gothic style typical of the Elizabethan stage. The cover is the florid Gothic, the tower was built between 1528 and 1582 and received its current appearance in 1618, and the faculty processional and the Chapel of San Pedro are incorporated into the set in the seventeenth century.
In 1904 the master is a national monument. During the Spanish Civil War (1936 - 1939) the church is burned losing virtually all its treasures, saving some old grills and chairs in the choir. In 1991 the diocese of Alcalá restored and is elevated to a cathedral-master.
In 1991 this rises to the rank of Master Church Cathedral, Diocese Complutense recovering that which from the V century until 1099.
