Photographer’s Note

This magnificient fountain in the Parque del Oeste of Madrid was built in 1952 in honour of the great architect Juan de Villanueva (1739-1811) whose works (Prado Museum, parts of Escorial, reconstruction of Plaza Mayor among others) has been key elements of Classical Madrid. In 1777, King Charles III appointed him Architect of the Prince and the Infants. From then to the end of his life he would work almost exclusively for the Royal House. In 1781 he was appointed Architect of the Royal Monastery of El Escorial, and King Charles IV appointed him Major Architect.

The fountain stood originally at the Glorieta de San Vicente from where it was moved to its current place (click on the map) in 1995.

Hi Laszio, This is a beautiful edifice. It just seems to jump off the screen. Your effort to concentrate on the fountain and reduce any detractions on the sides, is very helpful to the brilliance of this shot. The lighting is just sufficient to permit one to see this structure. Congrats on a fine shot. Regards, Roger

Guten Morgen László!
Dort seid Ihr also gewesen! Gut, dass Du diesen prächtigen Brunnen in die Mitte gestellt hast - denn dort gehört er hin. Schön, wie Du das fallende Wasser einfangen konntest, die Bewegung kommt gut rüber - und dieser "Stern" neben der Säule - Klasse!
Schade, dass man von der Umgebung nicht etwas mehr sieht ... aber vielleicht würde sie auch vom "Hauptdarsteller" ablenken.
Es ist unglaublich, dass so etwas noch in den 50er Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts geschaffen wurde.

The light management is exceedingly well done in this night shot. What appears to be the bright lights shining through the water, are they streetlights on the other other side?

Hallo Laszlo,
ich gehe jetzt einfach einmal davon aus, dass du kein Tripod bei dir hattest und du deshalb auf ISO 1600 hochgehen musstest, um das Bild mit den angegebenen Belichtungseinstellungen hell genug zu bekommen und es auch nicht allzusehr zu verwackeln. Ich muss gestehen, dass ich bei diesen Bedingungen gleich kapitulieren würde, aber das Eregebnis kann sich sehen lassen. Die Belichtung von dem Brunnen ist sehr gut gelungen. Die Schärfe ist noch ok. und das Bildrauschen hält sich in Grenzen. Gratuliere zu diesem technisch gesehen aussergewöhnlichen Bild.

Hi Lazslo,

I understand that you had no tripod when you took this photo and taking that into account the result is impressive and do not believe it would have been much better with a tripod. A really good work. TFS and have nice evening!
