The Monastery of El Escorial is one of the most singular Renaissance architectures of Spain and of Europe. Placed in St Lawrence of El Escorial (Community of Madrid), it occupies a surface of 33.327 m ², on the southern hillside of the mount Abantos, to 1.028 m of altitude, in the Guadarrama.

Known also as Monastery of the St Lawrence of El Escorial, Monastery of the St Lawrence The Real one, Monastery of the St Lawrence of the Victory or, simply, as El Escorial, was conceived in the second half of the XVIth century by king Felipe II and the architects Juan Bautista of Toledo, Juan de Herrera, Juan de Mijares, Gian Battista Castello The Bergamasco and Francisco de Mora as a big multifunctional, monastic and palatial complex, according to the paradigm of the Universal Touch, which implemented by Juan Bautista of Toledo, caused the style herreriano.

It was considered to be, from the ends of the XVIth century, the Eighth Marvel of the World, both for his size and functional complexity and for his symbolic value on the historicity of Madrid and of Spain. His architecture marked the step of the plateresque Renaissance one to the classicism desornamentado. Enormous work, of big monumentalidad, not only is a building of perfect universal touch, but also an enormous container of other arts.

His paintings, sculptures, cantorales, parchments, liturgical ornaments and other luxury, sacred objects and áulicos do that El Escorial is also a museum. His complex iconography and iconología has deserved the most varied interpretations of historians, groupies and critics. El Escorial is the crystallization of the ideas and of the will of his creator, Felipe II, a Renaissance prince.

The Monastery of El Escorial was promoted by Felipe II, between other reasons, to commemorate his victory in the battle of San Quintín, on August 10, 1557, festivity of the St Lawrence. The battle of San Quintín marked the beginning of the process of planning that culminated with the colocacón of the first stone, on April 23, 1563. The last stone put itself 21 years later, on September 13, 1584.
