Coria es una ciudad y municipio de la provincia de Cáceres, Extremadura (España). Cuenta con 12.767 habitantes y una densidad de población de 12,40 hab/km² (INE 2007).

El puente fue construído en el siglo XVI (1518) para servir de unión de las dos márgenes del río Alagón, importante arteria fluvial del norte extremeño. Es un bello ejemplo de la arquitectura renacentista, construído en piedra berroqueña. Consta de cinco arcos, conocidos también con el nombre de "ojos". En algunos documentos se indica que en 1590, debido a una fuerte riada, el río Alagón rompe la curva de un meandro aguas arriba y se desplaza un poco al sur, dejando al puente en seco.

Las aguas del río Alagón, tributario del río Tajo, en el tramo comprendido dentro de lo que se conoce como Cuenca de Coria, han definido un canal sobre los sedimentos cuaternarios actuales de caracter meandriforme. Pero lo más interesante es, que su historia debe remontarse a las épocas geológicas terciarias, cuando sirve de motor de arrastre de los sedimentos que, en las depresiones que se forman hasta colmar la Cuenca de Coria.

El puente abandonado por el río Alagón en Coria, es uno de los pocos exponentes tangibles de dinámica geológica, al servir de ejemplo del funcionamiemto hidráulico de un río, de su dinámica y evolución, relacionada claramente con la tectónica.

The bridge was built in the sixteenth century (1518) to serve as a junction of two river Alagón important river in northern Extremadura. It is a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture, built in stone. It consists of five arches, also known as the "eyes". Some documents indicate that in 1590, due to heavy flood, the river breaks the curve Alagón a meander upstream and moving a little south, leaving the deck dry.

The water Alagón's river, a tributary of the River Tagus, in the stretch in what is known as Cuenca de Coria, have defined a channel on the Quaternary sediments meandriforme current character.
