Plasencia es una ciudad situada en el norte de la provincia de Cáceres, a orillas del río Jerte, en la Comunidad Autónoma de Extremadura, España.

Conocida como la Perla del Valle, cuenta con una población de 40.105 habitantes (INE 2008) y es el segundo núcleo urbano de la provincia y el cuarto de la región.


La Muralla de Plasencia es una cerca militar medieval que rodea el casco histórico de la ciudad de Plasencia.

Historia
Cubo y barbacana.El sistema defensivo comenzó a edificarse desde el mismo momento de la fundación de la ciudad, en 1178, no obstante se estima que en el año 1196 aún no estaban completamente terminadas. En el año 1195 y como consecuencia de la batalla de Alarcos, Abu Yaqub Yusuf al-Mansur avanzó por todo el valle del Tajo recorriendo la actual Extremadura y reconquistando para los musulmanes importantes plazas como las ciudades de Montánchez, Trujillo y Santa Cruz, llegando hasta los "muros de Plasencia" la cual también cayó en sus manos. No obstante, un año después en 1197, el rey Alfonso VIII de Castilla retoma la ciudad y es en ese momento cuando se edifica definitivamente la muralla placentina, en un tiempo record de 9 meses y con el esfuerzo de 10.000 hombres.


Características
La mayor parte de la muralla está construida con mampostería, la cual se supone sería extraída a pie de obra. Se trata por tanto de sillarejos y bloques irregulares que se unen mediante mortero de tierra y cal y rellenenadose los espacios intermedios con otras pequeñas piedras.

La muralla consta de un doble sistema defensico, con un paño de gran grosor y una barbacana. Los dos muros se encuentran separados entre si por un foso y reforzados con una serie de torreones de planta semicircular conocidos como cubos.

En un principio constaba de 70 cubos con 4 torres defensivas, adosadas al Alcázar y 7 puertas principales más dos postigos. Sobreviven 21 cubos, 2 torres, 5 puertas y los dos postigos.

History

Features

At first consisted of 70 cubes with 4 defensive towers, townhouses and 7 andalusia Alcázar main doors and two shutters. Survive 21 blocks, 2 towers, and two 5-door shutters.
