Photographer’s Note

Badajoz es una ciudad de la Comunidad Autónoma de Extremadura (España), capital de la provincia del mismo nombre.

Fue fundada en el siglo IX, durante la dominación musulmana de la Península Ibérica.

Cuenta con 146.832 habitantes (INE 2008), lo que representa el 21,43% de la población total de su provincia y el 13,38% de la comunidad extremeña.

Esta cifra sitúa a Badajoz como el municipio más poblado de Extremadura y de la cuenca hidrográfica del Guadiana, uno de los ríos más importantes de la Península Ibérica, que surca la ciudad de este a oeste, para después girar hacia el sur. Es también la tercera capital de provincia con mayor número de habitantes de la Submeseta Sur, después de Madrid y Albacete.

Su término municipal, que hace frontera por el oeste con Portugal, ocupa una superficie de 1.470 km². Es el tercero más extenso de España, después de Cáceres, con 1.750,33 km², y de Lorca (Murcia), con 1.675,21 km².

La Plaza Alta, antiguo Zoco musulmán, recientemente rehabilitada, fue durante varios siglos el centro de la ciudad desde que ésta rebasó los límites de la alcazaba musulmana.

Porticada en gran parte, bajo sus arcos se celebraban los mercados en la Edad Media. También era lugar de celebración de festejos y reuniones de todo tipo. Desde 1899 hasta la década de 1970 alojó un mercado de hierro, trasladado, al perder su uso, al campus universitario.

Uno de sus flancos más interesantes es el formado alrededor del antiguo toril. Se trata de la reforma de la plaza conseguida por el Concejo y financiada por el Obispo Marín de Rodezno y el Cabildo Catedralicio de la ciudad. La reforma, que consistía en la renovación total de la plaza, comenzó en 1699 y se vio interrumpida en 1703 por la proclamación de la Guerra de Sucesión. Lo realizado, un 30 % del total, muestra una plaza cerrada del tipo de las plazas mayores de Valladolid, Madrid, Córdoba o Salamanca, con una decoración barroca de gran singularidad.

This figure puts Badajoz as the most populous town in Extremadura and the Guadiana river basin, one of the major rivers of the Iberian Peninsula, which cuts the city from east to west, then turn south. It is also the third capital of the province with the largest number of inhabitants of the sub Sur, after Madrid and Albacete.

The township, which forms the border with Portugal to the west, covers an area of 1470 km ². It is the third largest in Spain, after Cáceres, to 1750.33 km ², and Lorca (Murcia) with 1675.21 km ².

The High Square, Zoco former Muslim, recently restored, was for centuries the center of the city since it exceeded the limits of the Muslim citadel.

Porched largely under its arches were held markets in the Middle Ages. There was also a venue for meetings and celebrations of all kinds. From 1899 until the 1970s housed a market for iron, transferred, when their use, the university campus.

One of his most interesting is the sidewall formed around the old pen. Good shot taken from a nice angle. Perhaps I might have tried to avoid cuttng off the the legs of the people on the left but that's more of a minor distraction. The facades really look magnificent and have come out well in your picture.

Very beautiful architecture: the façades and the arches are wonderful. Specially the arches on the upper floor. They remind me at the Mezquita of Cordoba.
Despite the grey sky, the alternation of red and white makes the square pretty and colourful.

I have been to Badajoz many, many years ago and still remember this wonderful square. The architecture is stunning and very Moorish too.
Your photo has a superb sharpness and colours too. The only minor thing I would have done differently was to give more space on bottom. Otherwise, it is very well done.

Belle prise de vue et l'aspect graphique de la photo et les diagonales la rendent encore plus intéressante. Bonne composition et beau contraste entre les deux principales couleurs. Les deux personnages vont bien dans la scène et la note est excellente.

Je suis passé, il y longtemps dans cette ville alors que j'allait au Portugal. Je me souviens d'une belle ville, que je n'ai malheureusement pas pris le temps de visiter. Très joli travail malgré un ciel gris. Bravo.

il gioco di geometrie, linee, incastri di questa facciata farà felice Archimatica. Sembra uno di quei quadri tridimensionali da fissare per trenta secondi ed entrare dentro a scorgere un'immagine nascosta. Bellissimo

grafismo, prospettiva e sharp, sono i punti forti di questa bella foto.
La coppia in passeggio e l'auto con i fari accesi, movimentano bene la scena.

Hola amiga Charo,
esta arquitectura es sorprendente, y su decoración a base de arabescos y de dibujos geométricos es un imán para la vista.
Parece Op-Art.
Buen encuadre para conseguir la diagonal de los soportales, una buena perspectiva y un mágico grafismo.
Los "turistas" me resultan familiares, y añaden el toque dinámico y una buena referencia del lugar.
Bonito trabajo, tendremos que visitar Extremadura algún día.

Que coloridad plaza Charo, esta plaza es muy difernte a la de Salamanca o la de Madrid por su colorido pero es muy bonita, extremadura e smuy interesante ojala y alguin dia regrese a Merida que suan de las ciiudades que me gustaria ocner por las ruinas romanas.

a miracle of geometry, one losts soon the sense of space in this environment! I like that the colours are vivid and well saturated and the picture is almost free of any distortion - an especially important quality with this theme.
