The Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria of Ripoll is founded in the year 879 for order and desire of the count of Barcelona, Urgell and The Cerdaña, Guifré ' the pilós ' (Wilfredo ' the belloso ') to help to the reorganization of the vale pirenaico with Ripoll little populated in these times after his recent conquest by the Carolingian empire. There begin the works of construction of the monastery and on April 20 of 888 there dedicates for the first time the church, possibly the only building constructed then, being present Gotmar, bishop of Girona, the same count Guifré and his son Radulf, destined to be his first abbot. During the Xth century there are realized several remodelings of the church that goes so far as to dedicate in 2 more occasions, on June 25 of 935 and again in the year 977. Little by little, the monastery grows and turns into an important cultural focus thanks to his office, and to the near situation of the monastery with the Moslem and Mozarabic world, which allowed him to have a big number of Mozarabic, Moslem codices and visigodos, being one of the richest in the belonging of this type of books. During the IXth, Xth, XIth and XIIth centuries the monastery turns also into pantheon of the house of the counts of Barcelona, many of which rest in his interior.
