Photographer’s Note

Something different, because it`s a turning point for me on TE: Bigger than the big 1000 points, 5000 hits or the 100th upload. :)

It`s my first scanned photo. I know it`s not even anything special, but I`ve always preferred looking at scanned ones, especially here on TE. They - for me at least - give off a special feeling, their colors are less perfect and softer, the lighting is more specific and so on; I`m not able to describe it in details, but I think you know what I`m going on about here.
Not that there is anything wrong with digital, mind you. They are "more perfect", they can be altered in so many ways it`s hard to imagine ... But every now and again I think I`ll post something I`ve taken with analogue from now on.

Today a friend lend me an old Russian Zorki photo camera, I hope I`ll be able to make it work (I`m very much clumsy with everything that is not idiot proof). So, exciting times for me. I also have an old Zenith-E at home, but it`s (probably?) broken. :>

Anyway the photos shows two street players in Girona, Spain. Shot with Canon EOS 1000F, which was released in 1990 I think, so not as old as I would have hoped, but at least it`s idiot proof. :)

Scanned with HP ScanJet 4070, added frames, resized and sharpened in PS CS3 (that`s all the PP work I`ve done).

Sorry I disagree with you on this one. Film was great and the color etc but it was expensive affair. And limited in many ways, and the most challenging thing about digital is that it enables us to go online.

I used film before (limited to few years only) and that was the time without computers or internet, so everything was just prints or slides. I had to stop due to costs, and interests dropped after a while.

Having said all the above, they are just my own views about my experience. In no way am I saying film is not good or otherwise. Using film does not allow wastage and spoils. We shoot the needy only, whereas digital you go to extreme experimental shooting just to learn about photography.

So the beauty of digital is that through this scan you are able to do some changes. And make no mistake about it, this film scan has the certain contrast, texture and look about it that it is not easy to imitate using digital - and for this I AGREE with you.

nice the snapshot from the two musicians that were played in the road.Really film was better from almost digital cameras,but digitals have a lot of easiness and choices.I like the quality and the manage of the light.Well done.

really very very nice. This analogue pic has its own "atmosphere". I prefer better these kind of pics than "that perfect one" - like you've written in your note.
Colours are warm, musicians are true.

Hi Miha,
I've scanned a number of slides, for posterity more than anything else, and I'll tell you, while there is a dynamic range to film that's hard to replicate in digital I'm not sure I'd want to go back. Sort of a CD/MP3/Vinyl record discussion, I suppose, it's all preferential. ;)
This is an example, I think, of some of the range of film--although the scanner plays a part here in equalizing things--if you look at the details on the man in the very dark portion of the photo.

Ja jeb*** no...očitno sem uspela zelo grdo zignorirati vse tvoje obletnice na TE-ju... No, te ne bom! :)
Scanned...moram priznati da glede tega jaz nimam prav nobene nostalgije. Meni je bilo fotografiranje omogočeno šele s prihodom digitalizacije, tako da... Vseeno lahko razumem in vidim razliko na sami sliki, ko primerjamo obe tehnologiji. Vzporedna primerjava bi laho bila vinilke in CD-ji...Slednji so izpopolnjeni s kristalno čistim zvokom...a šarma vinilke ne morejo in nikoli ne bodo dosegli. In da je šarm slike še večji k temu pripomore motiv. Tak nostalgičen pridih začinjen še z malo prahu na temnih predelih. Ja...vseeno si človek ne more kaj da ne pomisli na stare dobre čase...

Vse najnaj! :P))

Dragi Miha, susede,

Levi svirač se krio od jakog avgustovskog sunca i pomalo ti pokvario kompoziciju i svetlosnu uravnoteženost. Možda bismo to i mi radili na njegovom mestu. Svejedno, ideja ti je dobra i vredna.
