Shot in the Maritime Museum of Barcelona (in catalan: Museu Marítim), which is installed in what were the Royal Shipyard (Drassanes Reials), active between the 13th and 18th centuries. The ship is a replica of the galley La Real, the biggest galley of its time (last third of the 16th century), which was built in this place and was the flagship of John of Austria in the Battle of Lepanto.
The museum shows aspects of ship building from Medieval Age to 18th century, has a couple of replicas of ships like the one show here and also the reproduction of parts of the interior of old ships.

Bello trabajo, amigo.

The replica ship takes up a lot of room in this museum and I like the way that you have photographed it. It must have been difficult under the lighting conditions but you have got good sharpness and colours.
Very well done and TFS.
Kind Regards, Ann

This is a very well conceived photograph.
We have the two opposing directions, equally strong, and causing a very pleasing dilemma about which way we view the shot. The receding arches are very decorative and create a fine sense of perspective, drawing us into the scene, whilst the brightly coloured boat, gilded and ornate, appears to be moving out of the frame!
The details are wonderful, both of the features and the textures.
I just feel sad that I missed this museum when in Barcelona. Still we were only there for 5 days... impossible to see everything. Somewhere to mark for my next visit.
Thank you for this,

These replicas are very popular all over Europe. This one is a beautiful and colourful example. It is a pity that they didn’t show the ship in its original surrounding. In the water sailing from coast to coast like in the early days.

The Maritime Museum of Barcelona is indeed a really fantastic place to visit in this amazing city. I also had a chance to admire its beautiful collection few years ago.

This could be a very good book cover on a book about the Golden Age of Spain. The composition and light management, the sharpness and colors, the inclusions of the two visitors to the museum to give it scale... all excellent!
Do you have any photos from Lisbon showing replicas of Vasco de Gamma's ship. I am planning to give a talk in how Europe started a period of ascendency 500 years ago, and I would love to integrate a slide of his world. Of course, in the Al Fama section, there are the beautiful and timeless tiles.
Angshu (54999) 2014-09-09 21:29
The ship is rich in design and must be huge, especially as I observe, reading your notes, that this ship was one of the biggest galleys of its day. Despite not so great light conditions, you have done really well showing us the fine details and the composition is well done as well creating a fine perspective. Good work!
mcmtanyel (11137) 2014-09-12 21:09
I like the repeating arches and the intricate details of the ship. Light is very well managed in this confined space.
PS. Thanks for your comments. You noticed the halo, too. That usually happens if I darken highlights too much. I thought I had not done it too much, but you are right, the halo is there. Do you have any remedies?
