Storks in Avila in Januari.

On my summer trips to Spain I’ve seen lots of storks in several places, specially in Caceres, Salamanca and Zamora.
But I was very surprised to see so many storks in the middle of the winter in Avila.
And Avila isn’t exactly the place in Spain with the warmest winters.
I used to think that storks went to Africa in wintertime.

According to the Wikipedia encyclopedia many species of storks are migratory.
Perhaps the storks in Spain are another specie and resident birds … or perhaps the storks we see there in winter aren’t the same birds as those we find in summertime and have come already from more northern places …

By the way, did you know that storks have no syrinx (the vocal organ of birds) ?
They are mute and give no bird call.
Bill-clattering is an important mode of stork communication at the nest and I could hear that bill-clattering all over Avila.

Hello Paul,
I love this blue...
You have taken a lovely shot of storks.
Congratulations,
Hulya

Tienes razón en tu nota. Pero en Avila ya estamos acostumbrados a ver cigüeñas todo el año, lo que demuestra que el frio, frio ya no existe en esta ciudad.
La fotografía preciosa
Un saludo
Mer

Paul,

this is a great picture of these storks, specially the one flying! You got it at the right time! And that's an interesting note about them.

Hi Paul,
I have surprised your photo because I took also photos in the same belfry with the storks, but in May, a few years ago.
I like its dynamism, your setting in the closed plane and the management of the light and the colors.
Though it is obvious a bit of noise, the photo is good, and it was not easy.
Good work.
Best regards,
Josep
