Peñafiel is a municipality of the province of Valladolid, Castile and León, Spain. It is the center of the Region, placed in a crossroads of ways and cultures, to 56 km of cardinal Valladolid, in direction this one.

His origin goes back to prehistoric cultures, although it is during the Reconquest when a city centre settles on the foot of the hill that dominates the castle. At the beginning of the Xth century Penna Fidele is erected as strong square opposite to the Islam, happening to depend at the end of century of the County of Castile. With Sancho García, he acquires a position privileged on having lodged a castle of border.

The big master of the town becomes Don Juan Manuel (1282-1348), nephew of king Alfonso X the Wise person. Don Juan Manuel chooses Peñafiel as the favorite place of all his states.

This castle rises on a narrow and long hillock that provides to him the characteristic form of a ship. It was declared a National Monument on June 1, 1917.

The origin of the fortitude goes back to the Xth century, documentary steadfastness of his existence staying in 943, when he was a king of León Ramiro II.

His tracing in plant possesses very narrow and elongated form (approximately 35 m. of width opposite to 210 m. of length). The set is defended by the first exterior wall of smooth linens that can date of the XIth century and be, therefore, the most ancient part of the construction. In his oriental side the only door of access opens to itself flanked for sendos turrets circular and crowned by a matacán of which only the modillions stay. The second formation of walls delimits the interior enclosure. It is constituted by 28 castellated buckets that are inserted equidistantemente in the long closing defining a succession of curtains also castellated and passable in his summit across an adarve.

In the approximate center of this space one raises the tower of the homage, rectangular prism of approximately 34 m. of height that lodges three domed plants. The rest remains divided by her into two zones which primitive wrought ones have disappeared; they would serve as accommodation for the troop and would receive the stores and service areas. His patios would do function of high courts. In one of these wings, the south, one finds now the Provincial Museum of the Wine.

Two WS with more nearby captures of the castle.

Hello Charo,
The image with the moat is well composed but not as personnal as the workshop photos. The castle walls and towers are beautifully engineered, and so clean. A masterpiece of work for the designer and builders.
Very nice grouping...

Charo,
Excellent view of this fine old castle. Your composition is great including the river which leads the eye into the shot nicely. The lighting and colors are fine as is the sharpness and DOF. The deep blue sky adds a nice backdrop for the castle. Your WS shots are nice as well.

Asa
